Fuel Tank Strainer in a Wagon

Does a 300TD have a strainer in the tank... If so where...
My wagon setup is different from the images I have seen on the sedans.
Thanks
82 300td

Yep, your car has a tank screen.

Haynes page 118 shows both types of tanks, wagon and non. Each has a part number 68, the tank screen.

Please go to Buy Parts, above, and drill down to fuel delivery for your model wagon. If you compare this part number with the deceptively similarly-looking part in a coupe or sedan, you will note those list an entirely different number.

Although they look alike in photos, I susupect the one you need has the center not bored and tapped. I suspect your fuel tank has some sort of chamber built within in which this filter resides, vicinity of the fuel feed (lower) line.

Please also refer to Buy Parts for photos and descriptions of the fuel lines.

Good luck.

Tank strainer

If your TD is like my 85 TD, the strainer is smack in the middle of the tank, underneath. You will need a 22MM bolt or a whopping big Allen wrench and visegrips to unscrew it.

It can be cleaned, and probably won't need to be replaced. I used a toothbrush and degreaser. In about ten minutes it was just like new.

Even when the gauge says the tank is empty, there will be a lot of stuff in it.

Be prepared with a large tub to hold it in. You can filter it through a t-shirt and return it to the tank if there isn't a lot of algae in it.

I would have a couple of gallons of fresh diesel on hand, just in case.

I haven't measured the fuel lines. I think you might take them off and then measure them to be sure you got it right. I'd replace them with Viton or some other biodiesel friendly tubing if I were you.

Good luck!

Good info above. Here is what it looks like:

Much easier to do on a wagon than a sedan. No hoses running to it.......

The strainer fits into a collar where the fuel is drawn through the non-mesh holes you see at the bottom of the strainer plastic.

There is a small section in the bottom of the tank seperate from the main portion of the tank.{see yellow arrow pointing to this lower section}

The fuel is drawn through the strainer, flows out the holes in the bottom (pictured in green}. The line to the lift pump flows from this section, and I assume the return line flows into the main tank.

Nice, Jimmy. See if you can get all that good stuff in the DIY section.

lift the rear so you can slide a 5 gal bucket under. pour 5 gal regular gas thru & thru & thru to flush the tank while you are at it.

The strainer is not a filter, just a big chunk catcher.

Thanks all for your good information...will tackle next week. Should I order a new filter just incase mine is damaged, or is it constructed of durable material and just need a good cleaning?
Thanks again.

The "screen" is usually pretty durable, however, Murphy's Law is famous for a reason! What you do need is a new gasket/seal, so you might as well get a new screen. I don't think they are that expensive.....
