$3,249.00 !!!???
Item#: ATK938A

Size & Type:MB 300D TURBO 81-85 ENG

I'm not sure one could rebuilt it for that price. I wonder what they mean by complete rebuild?

"Not available" most likely. Napa is bad about that.

Hatterasguy 10-07-2007 11:03 AM

They probably can't get it, maybe it just got stuck on the website when they built it.

$6700 for a factory rebuild is very reasonable. Is shipping and handling included in the price?

I wonder how much a short block would cost?

I didn't price a short block from the dealer, it's about $1K less than a long block from metric so I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer difference is similar. My understanding was that the $6700 price was for pick-up at the dealer. I hope we wouldn't have to pay shipping from the factory.

I can't imagine buying anything except fluids from NAPA.

Hatterasguy 10-07-2007 11:43 AM

They probably store them in NJ. MB seems to have a monster wearhouse down their.

I've never had to pay for shipping for any part I've ordered from the dealer, including a few that had to come from Germany.

Same here. I didn't specifically ask, but I'm sure that was the total price.

I had mercedes rebuild the transmission in my S-class. Shipping was done via truck freight to the authorized mercedes rebuilder. After rebuilding I understand it became part of official inventory and was then returned to the dealer via air freight at no charge to me, and I too have ordered misc parts for my w123 which have come from germany via fedex (no charge).

rebuilt engines

I think Adsit lists 617s and others rebuilt engines for aboit $4,000 online.

t walgamuth 10-07-2007 07:15 PM

adzit is the one in Muncie?, right?

My favorite machinist spoke to someone over there and they don't true the deck with the crank and don't resleeve, but just bore each cylinder without truing the block and slap in new pistons. This is not the way the fsm suggests rebuilding a benz motor and not how I would want it done.

My indy won't deal with Adsit at all either. They have a very poor rep for customer service. The only places I would buy an engine are metric and the dealer.

I'd never use anything unless I rebuilt it myself. I suggest you all do the same.
The reason I became a 'mechanic' was because : what you do to your own car yourself, is good.
what anyone else does; who knows...
same goes for engines obviously.
yo have to have a good machine shop of course.

I called our local dealed in July the see if the 617.952 crate engine was still available. no longer available.
I purchased mine from Metric Motors, it comes with a injector pump, glow plugs and injectors. It also has the oil pan, my valve cover was broken so Mike threw on one. they installed the dip stick tube, and the oil return tube from the turbo, this doesn`t normaly come with the eng. I also mentioned I was going to replace the vacuum pump, and he mailed me one at his cost.
I drove to Metric Motors and droped off the old eng. and picked up the new one. my cost was $6000.00. this included the $400.00 core charge. If mine checks out, I get the core back.
Metric Motors is very good to work with I can`t praise them enough.

We drove the Phoenix, Az last thurs, and returned this morning 10-8.
I have a total of 1960 miles so far. first tank of fuel, 30.62, 25.22 and 28.48 MPG. not too bad. engine runs great.

There were two 240D crate eng. that sold on E-Bag. $1800.00+ for one, and $1600.00+ for the other one.

My dealer told me they just sold several 617s for use in snow cats, so it sounds like he can get them. I'm not sure if I will end up going to the dealer or metric when it's time to do mine, hopefully I have a couple of years before I need to really start shopping.

5 years ago I purchased a new motor for my 1977 240D from the MB dealer, Houston Star Motor Cars, very complete motor with everything on it, 3 years warranty, the dealer price with my old engine exchanged was $3600 plus about $1000 for my local shop to install it for me. I now have 50K miles on it, the only issue that I had with that motor was a vacuum pump failure early on.
From what I understand these re-manufactured diesel motors are assembled in a facility somewhere in Denmark for MB and are sold worldwide with almost like a new motor warranty.
