Comments on 1980 vintage BMW diesels?

Was looking through Ebay and found this car

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120166957216&ssPageName=ADME:BBS:MOTORS:1123

Was wondering what other 'in the know' think of BMW's oil burners?

I love the look of the BMW but the interior seems very 'plastic'.

Comments?

Never driven in one before, but from the pictures alone, I don't like it. I always loved the exteriors of old 80's BMW's, especially the headlights.. but that interior is just lackluster.

Could it have really cost BMW that much to stick some wood veneer on the dash?

Drive train was very durable. Ford used them in Lincolns. And there was a small Motor coach RV that used that drive train as well.

Looks very Volkswagenesque to me. I've never seen one in person, let alone driven one. Are they comparable to a 123 turbo performancewise?

Ive heard that they are a real pain to get parts for, very expensive when you do find the parts, and they are kinda flakey in the reliability dept. But that's only what I've heard, so I can't really prove $h!t on that one.

Yes, that engine was put in the Vixen motorhome, one of the coolest motorhomes produced in the US. They eventually replaced it with a GM V6. I knew a guy who claimed to get 30mpg with the BMW diesel in a Vixen.

The E28 chassis is a fun one to drive. The bolstered seats hold you in place while you take corners rediculous fast. I miss mine. The ineriors are no where near as well put together as a 123 or 116 MB. Antilock brakes were available. The chassis is good though. The brakes stop on a dime. I know little of the engine that hasnt already been said here though.

I drove one back when they were new or pretty new. I would put the performance pretty close to a 300d turbo. Ride and handling slightly better than a benz.

I imagine they are not as durable as a benz 616 617 but better than a vw.

I love my E28 gasser. It is the best handling car I have ever driven. The interior is German Spartan in style. Very close to what you would have gotten in a Euro Benz. It has held up very well for 24 years. The leather is still supple and everything still fits with no rattles.

That being said a BMW is like a tin can next to a W126. It just feels "light"

Things to look for:

1) make sure the climate control handles operate smoothly

2) Make sure that the SIL (Service Indicator Light) is working properly. THese BMWs have NiCad batteries in the instrument panel They wear out and you start seeing weird lights come on in the SIL area and they you loose all your gauges. The fix is relatively easy and involves removing the soldered on batteries and installing new ones.

3) Make sure that the transmission is working properly. You should never rev the engine in Neutral as this will damage the 4HP22 tranny.

good luck!!

The 524td is essentially a 528e with a 2.4L turbocharged 6-cylinder diesel. Properly maintained, that diesel is pretty durable BUT - it has a timiing belt that must be changed regularly and they were only sold in the US for a couple of years so diesel-specific BMW parts are probably very hard to get by now. In fact, parts were getting hard to find for these diesels 10 years ago when I was working at an independant BMW shop.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I had a gas E28- LOVED it

I still look fondly at E28's, I think to myself "that's a good car"
my 2 litre was a bit slow

only problem was air cond- re gassed 134 - didn't work for long -

apart from that, didn't see a mechanic for 5 years!
