I would have to agree that not using a proper leak orifice was incredibly stupid. It was probably even more expensive to use the wire instead!

I imagine an engineer(s) was very proud that he got the system to work. But, IMO, it is an overcomplicated POS design. Everything is interrelated... if one thing fails the whole thing goes down. With the next gen system it at least still partially functioned if something broke, and is MUCH easier to diagnose and work on. Considering that the system was designed in the late 60's or so it is still a pretty impressive feat. MB was just stupid for using it.

I'm thinking of simplifying my acc system.
I have a universal heater control from a 80's GM vehicle that does all the functions of the Mercedes system but without all that automatic crap...if I'm missin my right arm, then yes, perhaps I'd appreciate some automatic climate control, but I'm not. ha

so I'll be turfing the servo
