Broke my sunroof

Ever since I got my car, the sunroof would only go back a little more than half way open before it would get stuck. With a little pull, I could get it started moving closed, and then it would close OK.

I figured it just need lubricating, so I bought some spray on white grease, and with the switch got it to go back as it could this time about 3/4 open. I then tried to open it the rest of the way by using the hex nut on the sunroof motor (per owner's manual). I couldn't get the hex nut to turn one way or the other more than about one revolution.

I then tried closing it using the switch, and it wouldn't move. I grabbed it with one hand and got it moving close. Got to about 3/4 close and stops. Will not move any further close. With the switch, I can get to open about 1/2 way, and will close to about 3/4 then it stops. To make matters worse, I broke the plastic hex-nut on the sunroof motor.

Questions:
1> How much force does it normally take to open and close the roof with the hex-nut?

2> What can I do to get my sunroof closed.

Hey there!
I just came in from struggling with my sunroof. Before I say anything let me tell you that I have an 87 300e and am answering based on my experience with this car.
My roof has a broken lift arm so it goes up fine but comes down crooked and the broken piece causes disruption so it wont slide back.
I'm not too familiar with 82 sd sunroof. Does it go up or only back and forth?

Anyway, the emergency nut on the motor only closes (clockwise turn) or lowers (counterclockwise turn) for my car. Hex nut does not open the roof.
1) It took a fair amount of force and didn't see any results from my nut on motor.
2) Even though it moves there may be a broken piece (as in the case of my sunroof) interfering and causing your roof to not open and close fully.

Try something as simple as checking your fuses. My A fuse blew and was the reason my motor wouldn't work.
Try having someone operate the switch while you pull the roof. Try using the suction cups they sell for removing dents to aid in gripping the top.
If that fails but you can get still it to slide back, I would take the steps to remove the roof so you can examine the cable, rails, and the mechanics for breaks. I certainly wish I could move mine backward!

I'm in a similar situation with you. Wish you the best of luck!
Matt

Possum,

I'm no expert but three of the posts on that thread are mine -- fixed two of my 300D's. If you want to try to talk it through, send a PM and I'll give you my home phone.

Good luck.

PS. What's happening out in Lost Wages these days?
