300sdl Turbo Removal- Wastegate stuck open
 
So, my symptoms are that the wastegate is stuck open, ie. no low rpm power at all, to the point where if I am going up an incline from dead stop I can't actually get to a higher rpm for normal power and go nowhere.

Fuel system flushed
Boost sensor/lines, cleaned, checked, changed, bypassed- no difference
Injectors replaced
Filters replaced
Egr plugged
Cat bypassed with straight pipe
New air filter
Trap Ox replaced
No play in turbo fan, turns smoothly
etc...

So- now I am removing turbo to check and clean the wastegate. I have removed the egr, the trap ox replacement pipe and am a bit stuck. I have read that I should take off the exhaust manifold and turbo at the same time, but the turbo is in the way of the nuts so is there some other way or some fancy method I am not thinking of??

I have taken a turbo off
Just jack the front passenger side up with a floor jack you can adjust. The exhaust manifold coming off is a falacy, and only adds expense. You have to take your whole intake sustem, and the side firewall(?). Remove the top fresh air crossover pipe, and the EGR valve, and the short pipe fro the top of the fresh air side of the turbo. Once that is off, there are 4 bolts on the exhaust manifold. Some can be taken off with a rachet, and some with a combination wrench. When those nuts are off, take the back clamp off the exhaust. Not the front. Or better, just unbolt the three bolt collar off the exhaust pipe. When that is done, there are just 2 bolts at the bottom on the mounting bracket if I remember right. With the right extension, one could possibly not have to remove the turbo from the bracket, and eliminate fighting with it and the oil drain pipe. When that is done, it should just lift out.
The bolt/nut sizes are all 8, 10, 13, and 14 mm. Let me know if this helps.

A turbo doesn't provide any boost below 2000 rpm, so replacing it isn't going to solve a problem relating to climbing an incline from a dead stop. Any W126 diesel will climb a fairly steep incline effortlessly at 1500 rpm........well before the turbo contributes any assistance.

What's the 0-60 time on this vehicle?

Does it have power at 80-90 mph..........or will it not make 90 mph without talking nearly forever?

I don't have any numbers for you, 0-60 etc... however, the car has good power as soon as the turbo kicks in or above 2000rpms (it might not have anything to do with the turbo, but it seems like it).

My problem is that if there is an incline I can't get enough power out of it to reach 2000rpms! when starting from a stop. I would say it is almost like it is in a high gear and won't go into low but I shift down and it makes no difference.

Thoughts?

Well, it's definitely not the turbo.

Low torque at low rpm's are related to camshaft or valve timing issues. This is provided that the engine makes good power at high rpm's. We cannot be certain of this until you make some tests as I requested above. The vehicle might perform properly at high rpm........high power........or it might not. If it does not, then a completely different set of possible issues needs to be considered.

Have you tried doing a proverbial italian tuneup?

Mine seemed very sluggish too until it got up to ~2kRPM, then zip. Long story short.. soccer mom, SUV, downhill, at me (uphill), floor it, hold it, big cloud of soot, ~4k RPM, zip up & over hill, accelleration much, much better rest of my drive into work :D, accelleration got much better over next few months :cool:, accell from line enough to keep up with gassers now.
