Well.
Things went back together very smoothly. Took a while. But we were taking our time. Alternator bracket went back on without much fuss. Used red Loctite for the bracket mounting bolts (was suggested by a classic Mercedes mechanic). Blue Loctite for the six 8mm bolts for the hub/vibration damper. The bolts for the 1981 300D that has the hub/vibration damper were 8mm x 45mm w/ 1.25 thread. Stock hardness was 8.8, but the place I found locally had that size in 12.9 hardness.. Stronger and still cheaper than the dealership. Torqued to 35Nm/26ftlbs. Then put the fan back on, belts back on, snugged up the accessory bolts, tightened the adjustments for the belts, and final lock down of all the accessory mounting bolts .... Car seems to be running very well and we were good to go. Oh, the belts were in decent shape... but since we spent all that effort to take it all apart... new belts went on. All in all, a very fun project for the first time working on a Mercedes. My thanks for everyone's help! .
