As far as the original poster goes... we're talking about mechanical modifications - but in sub-20 mileage territory, we should be talking about mechanical REPAIR instead.
These engines are all capable of delivering better than 20mpg even with the most lead-footed driver (i.e. me) behind the wheel, unless they've been modified for performance enhancements, which isn't territory we're really hitting here anyway. An unmodified w123, w126, whatever, ought to be delivering somewhere between at least 20 to 30, if it's in proper functioning order. Shouldn't it? |

Yes, even modified it should get 20+mpg unless you are doing things like autocross or drag racing.

Don't forget to consider road traffic conditions. Here in the US it's not as bad as in other countries. I don't know how bad the traffic flow is in Romania but it sure drops the MPG quite a bit.
