1983 240D instrument cluster removing
Sorry, I know this posted else where but my searches get a "no matches". How do I get the gauge cluster out on a 1983 240D? no dash lights I already know it's the pot from other threads.

I removed the kick panel and reached up from below and pushed it out. There should be enough slack in the cables to then reach behind cluster from above to unplug wires and unscrew oil pressure line. Have a rag handy!

Coat Hanger
If its the same as the 300D 123s, just get a wire coat hanger, cut in 2 straight pieces about a foot long each, sharply bend one tip of each about 1/8" long.
Insert each wire (bent end first facing each other) on each side of the cluster roughly between 1/3 to 1/2 high from bottom. Once it catches, slowly pull out. If the cluster has never been removed, it might take a little effort. Or, you can buy the special tool from some online places that looks like what I described above. It will also help loosening the speedo cable in the engine compartment as this held down in there and it will stop the cluster from coming out. |

Also, this is how the FSM and Haynes recommends it. |
