Just how loud IS your straight pipe exhaust?

And where would I go to get the 2.5" stock? NAPA? Autozone?

I went to a backwoods shop with an old crusty man working there. He gladly did what I asked. He even called me a few days later to ask how it sounded. A nice gurgle when idling and a little loud when accelerating. I like watching my wife pull out of the driveway when she takes it to work. I would love to hear it from the side of the road on the highway at full tilt.
A little loud? YES. Unbearable that it draws attention or nasty stares or annoys you when driving? NO

On my OM616 turbo, its very nice, now its more aggressive and authoritative, earlier on it was too polite, its never rude.

I also enjoy the sound....the volume varies with throttle, its very quiet in "normal" driving, but makes some noise at full throttle (but its an awesome noise)

As for obtaining the pipe....you'd probably be best leaving a shop to install it, as it needs to be bent several times around the suspension in back...and that'd be pretty hard on your own. The piece of pipe shouldn't be more than $25-40 at a shop....and maybe $35-40 labor? (took the guy at Lentz that did mine about 20-25 mins from start to finish)

Which leads me to the next question: would throwing on a single, universal muffler be a bad idea? Would it be affective in reducing noise, or would it just rob my already joked about horsepower? And problems for the turbo? Thanks.

I plan on more or less having a tin can on the end.

you would need a muffler for a diesel... or why not a cherry bomb

I'd make sure it's one that's free of packing (like a Flowmaster, for example) so that it doesn't get clogged with soot.

Yeah, what Shawn D said. I was going to go with a single muffler but as I started looking there are diesel specific mufflers.

Volume also depends on the turbo. The T3 is louder than the K26.

Oh yeah...in a BIG way

I have 3" turbo to tip and it's awesome
slight clearance issues though, I have a glass pack race muffler (because it was cheap) and it cuts down the drone on the highway quite a bit.

There is no performance difference between the two, I'd just use 2.5"

I dont know, its bearable but it does attract attention in the city especially downtown SF where the big buildings surrounding you echo the noise. all i get is ugly stares or people covering their faces from the diesel stench.

So far no cops have pulled me over for the noise (knock on wood) Altough if they are next to me and i pull off from a stop light they immediatly look at me and give me a nasty stare. And this massive W126 diesel wasnt built for high speed chases

All in all i like the straight pipe but i can get annoid of it with over an hour of driving and id want to get back into my quieter cars with the stock exhaust systems

I've been 4 years with a straight pipe exhaust, no cop has ever shown any interest in it and the car has passed multiple emissions tests/inspections.
