oil cooler lower mount

i was under the car looking for the source of a persistant oil leak and it looks like my lower cooler hose is seeping. I have a new hose on order but the other thing is the lower end of the oil cooler seems to be really loose. I can move it forward and back a half inch. is there a mount missing here? it seems like all of that motion may have caused the oil line to fail and I dont want a new hose to suffer the same fate.

Thanx

Scott

There is a lower bracket that takes a long 10mm bolt (head size). Its kinda hard to get too, you have too get right up under the bumper and use a good light.

it's a mirrored version of the one that sits on top of the cooler.

True, but you don't have to remove the bolt, when the radiator is installed it just slides into the bottom mount. I'm guessing that whoever installed the radiator last failed to correctly connect it to the cooler. If you can lift the radiator (with the top bracket removed) about 1-2 inches without disconnecting everything you may be able to just place it in the mount.

I'm not sure about the 240D (never had it out), but on the 300D the top bracket comes off and the side of the radiator has a slot that just slides into the bracket while it's still connected to the oil cooler. I replaced my radiator without having to touch that PITA bolt.

so are you saying i need to remove the top bracket and slide the oil cooler down into a pocket or something then re-attach the top bracket? there didnt seem to be anything down there at all. I did see a loop on the oil cooler that maybe could get a bolt through it or something

I don't know if there is room to move the oil cooler down, the radiator has to move up and drop into the bracket (assuming it's installed). The lower bracket should be identical to the upper bracket (but up-side-down). does that make sense?

Edit: OK, I crawled under the front of my car a took a photo of the lower bracket. Radiator to the right, oil cooler to the left. You can see the 10 mm bolt that holds the bracket to the oil cooler and the slot in the plastic radiator tank that slides into the bracket. Does yours look anything like that?

got it, I wonder how that bracket fell out if it is trapped under the radiator? Oh well. I had a response to buy one so hopefully I will be able to put one on next week.

Thanx
