vacuum question
My doors lock as long as I do that within a minute of shutting off the car; otherwise, I have to lock manually. If I get out of the car right way, I hear a hissing sound coming from the engine compartment. Is there a simple fix for this? I see so many hoses that it scares me to start poking around when I don't know what I'm doing. Maybe I should just take it to my indy for this. I have had so much fun doing some little things on this car that I don't want to stop.

BTW, this is about my 1983 300D. My transmission when shifting from 2 to 3rd before warming up shifts too fast. I bet that's related ???

If you can hear your vacuum leak, the solution should be pretty simple. Open the hood once you shut off the engine and trace down the hissing sound. Repair the leak. A cone shaped amplifier made out of paper or something, stuck in your ear might make finding the leak easier.

While you can hear the leak, jiggle some of the vacuum lines around to see if you can make the sound change, to help locate the leak.

Replace all the rubber connectors also, while you are at it.
