glowplug relay questions/ excessive smoke

my car smokes alot at idle, my relay is currently fried so i have to jump the relay to get the car started when cold, does the relay kick in when the car is at idle to clear up some of the diesel smoke? because at idle my car smokes alot and is not blue or black and also not head gasket smoke, its like a greyish smoke and it really smells like unburned diesel, my car used to start cold with only 2 glowplugs so i dont think the compression is bad, is there a way i can adjust the IP? i kno its a risky move but at this point my car is slow and i am getting sick of it and dont have money to get another car, so if anyone has a clue to why my car is doing this please lmk, thanks

Have you replaced any of the GP's? The relay stays on for about a minute or so after starting the engine, butthe GP's need to be working in order to make a difference.

If your car is slow, try replacing the air and fuel filters first.

Stone cold smoke unburnt fuel at startup sounds almost normal to me. Fuel additives help boost cetane level also improve combustion. When I think of incomplete fuel combustion, carbon fouled piston crowns come to mind. Best way to clean out the engine is high speed driving couple of hours.

TurbeSDL,

Grey/white smoke is unburned fuel from cylinders that are not firing.

NO, on a '87 SDL the GP relay does not come on again once it has turned off .
