Doh! just filled up the diesel with gas

I went out early and decided to fill up the 03 Dodge cummins and stupidly grabbed the wrong nozzle and filled up with regular.

Actually I did this once before a couple of years ago and you would think I would pay more attention, but the deed is done and the tank is full of a mix of 27 gallons of gasoline and about five or six of diesel.

My question is, I have two fresh gallons of rotella straight 30w. If I don't drain the entire tank and instead put in the rotella, what mixture of rotella and RUG would make my common rail ultra high pressure injection happy?

Or do I simply have to bite the bullet and drain it all?

I shudder to think of the repair cost of such a sofisticated system if I trash it.

Dont take the risk, drain it all and then put some diesel and drain again.

Drain it all and refill with fresh Diesel. That much gas will take out the injectors in short amount of time.

I was afraid that was what you were going to say!

If you have a 617 diesel you could use it up 5 gallons at a time with very little risk. BTw I see you are in Lafeyette, we are on vacation and staying in Lebanon.

Ouch! That's particularly painful these days. I've never had a diesel, but I'm looking to buy one soon. I worry about doing things like that.

That useed to be my biggest worry about getting a diesel, but my constant efforts to find stations around here that actually sell diesel have prevented any misfueling (so far).

Happy Motoring, Mark

One of our drivers filled the F-550 up at work here with gas and ran the whole tank through. It ran like crap but didnt have any problems at first. Now it has injector problems. Big bucks.

Yup, and then when you are filling the attendentant will yell over the outside PA HEY MISTER YOU ARE PUTTING DIESEL IN YOUR CAR:D

That really sucks. Now you need to. At least you probably killed any algae in your tank and if you can just about empty the tank before refilling with fresh fuel, your tank will have less sediment in it as well.

Sorry to hear about that... Like the others said, it'll trash everything. That HPCR system depends on the fuel lubricity even more so than a standard injection system. I'd hate to have to buy another fuel pump and injectors.

Since buying my first Diesel, I've been vigilant about picking the right pump. So far I've been lucky.

I would think you could drain the tank and titrate the gas into your lawn mowers and whatnot over time, mixed with pure gasoline. Shouldn't be wasted...

not many of us have storage capabilities for 27 gallons of Gasoline, plus if you live in the city limits, it's against the law to store more than 16 or so gallons of gasoline... carefull there, most likely, a garage shop with a recycle system will have to drain it for you.

I just went to a local contractor with a lot of heavy equipment (belly pan scrapers, dozers, loaders, etc...) and asked for an old 55 gallon Rotella oil drum. They seemed happy to give them away.

Tom;

I feel your pain. Although I haven't done it yet, it's always a possibility. Similar to flying a retractable gear airplane. There are those pilots that have landed gear up and those that are going to! ;)
