Lubro-Moly Diesel purge: Snake Oil? Beagle please respond...

Mr. Beagle states his dislike for Lubro-Moly Diesel Purge in this thread near the bottom of post #2:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=155294

He also references an earlier post of his on the topic, but I cannot find it.

I'd love to hear more from Mr. Beagle and others on why Diesel Purge is harmful. I've used it several times, and have heard endorsements from many knowledgable and experienced diesel afficianados. My opinion is that in the proper situation (dirty fuel system causing rough running and smoking) this is a tool which should be considered, along with Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner. If there is evidence that these cleaners can do more harm than good, I'd like to hear more!

i read many posts related to diesel purge before taking the plunge. i only recall one person not happy with the product, could of very well been him. but everyone else swears by it and i had good luck with it. with how many people are on this forum you're bound to come across atleast one who disagrees. but i'm with you, diesel purge and a good valve job are the best/cheapest and least time consuming jobs for these engines.

(diesel purge parts list)
diesel purge x2 cans - $14
4ft of 5/16 hose - $4
clean milk jug -FREEBIE!
two bolts to plug return/feed lines - FREEBIE!
--------------------
$18

(valve job parts list)
14mm x2 wrenches - $8
hbf feeler gauge (verified accuracy ) - $2
valve cover gasket (opt) -$7
-----------------------------
$10

I did a purge on all MB's just after purchase. Haven't seen much if any difference. My guess would be if the car has been using low grade fuel, do this first, then use only the fuel you're comfortable with.

I didn't notice a huge difference. www.dieselgiant.com Russell really seems to like it.

I had some success with Diesel purge, but it is just a bandaid, really. I don't remember who was so adamantly opposed to it, but I think he was saying that it stirs up sediment that otherwise would have remained safely lodged. And that this sediment will damage the delicate and precision parts in the injector pump, injectors, and perhaps other parts of the engine as well.

Here is one thread:

Diesel Purge solves knocking in 240D

Do a search for "snake oil"

This is kind of an old discussion with much written from believers and non-believers alike.

You'll have to arrive at your own conclusions as to its merits.

Heres a couple of hundred to get you started.....http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/search.php?searchid=1745407

I ran a can through my 300SD a while back, the idle has smoothed out and the engine vibration has reduced, acceleration has also improved a bit.

This is what DP looks like after it came back from the return line

Now my question is... is SeaFoam snake oil?

I bought a car with a really rough running engine also nailing badly on a couple of cylinders.
I ran 2 cans of diesel purge connected directly to the IP within a couple of minutes the nailing stopped and the engine smoothed out! I was astounded i have been a mechanic all my working life and never believed in any "mechanic in a can" but having read so many favorable reports i thought for as little as it costs i would give it a try.The return flow was coming out the same color as it came out of the can,i just could not get over how quiet and smooth it ran.My elation was short lived as soon as it was connected to the car fuel lines within a couple of minutes it sounded as bad and ran as roughly as it had before i started. That was my experience with it yours may vary. However i did think of one real use for it,sometimes even to an experienced ear it is difficult when listening to an unfamilar diesel it can be difficult to discern serious engine noise from what may be normal,so i think it could be a valuable diagnostic tool on a prepurchase inspection to take away fuel related noise and roughness so one could hear what the engine sounds like mechanically. My $.02 Don

I siphoned the tank from my sister's 240D to replace the fuel supply line coming from bottom of the tank and that's what the fuel looked like without using any Diesel Purge. Black as the oil in the engine.
