whats the purpose of the small shock attached to the throttle linkage

I've noticed that the 240d's and 300d's with auto transmissions do not have one. My 240d manual transmission has one. It is about 7 inches length and looks like it may slow the return on the linKage when you release your foot from the peddal or vice versa. Anyway mine got disconnected toward the bottom and won't reconnect. Should I replace it, or pull it off and discard it. RAY M

Throw it away says me. An idiot device for people who dont like to feather accelerator peddle themselves in between shifts. Wonderful attachment for those who dont like to drive. Gotta understand the 4-spd 240D without gadgets like this is just too demanding, taxes driving skills to the max.

They started on the later 240s, my 85 has one. I does seem too be easier to get a "smooth" shift out of. Maybe just my imagination

Could be something to act like a dashpot found on carburetors?

Is part #233 in the diagram the one you're wondering about?

it basically slows the throttle after you let off on it. makes it so you can upshift perfectly into the next gear at the right rpm.

I just bought one the other week for my 190D. The old one was worn out (the oil had leaked out which made it ineffective).

A new one from the dealer was around $60 and they had to bring it in from somewhere far away. I couldn't find it online anywhere.

The new part made a subtle difference; since I know it's there, I am aware of the change, but I don't think it's a critical component. It tends to prevent tiny fluctuations in your foot position from affecting the engine, and like Cervan said, it makes the engine RPMs drop more slowly when you take your foot off of the pedal, which helps when shifting.

I've replaced / fixed a bunch of tiny little things on the car that on their own seem insignificant, but when combined they make the car quieter and smoother and more pleasant to drive. This is one of those things...

Door check straps.....I know I'm not the only one to keep putting off installing one. Then it feels so good when the doors back too "not being an announce". Yah, its nice to have the small stuff working.

I got mine here

It works great, really does smooth out the shifts. It just slows the rate that the throttle can be opened and closed.

From my understanding, these are a must have for the OM617.952 manual trans conversions.

funny story..in retrospect

My glow plug relay kept blowing over and over causing me fits trying to find the fuses locally. When I finally brought it in to my mechanic, within 30 seconds he pulled that little dampener out of my engine, unnattached. It had come undone and was laying across 2 glow plugs causing the short circuit!

I agree that replacing it made a very subtle difference....
