126 (300SDL) Blower Fuse Kit

Help! I have a 300sdl and there is no air coming from any of the vents. The fuse (16 I believe) has melted and sunk in the fuse box. Now, even if I were to put a new fuse in, there would be no way to make contact between the metal points. I have read that there was a letter regarding this in problem in 1987 dealing with the 126 models and the blower motor's fuse.

Can anyone tell me how to get one of these fuse kits for my car so that I can use the climate control? Is this part still available?

Any info would be a great help!

just get a 30 amp wired fuse kit. 5.00 at most any autoparts store. and wire it in.
there are two or three screws that hold down the fusebox, take them out and lift up the fuse panel, and hook your fuse holder in under the screws that hold the wires leading to and from that fuse.
disconnect the battery first...

How did an 87 300SDL get a fuse in the fuse box? I thought this problem came up before that... mine had a little satellite fuse in a plastic case outside the fuse panel itself, a 30A strip fuse. Melted the plastic and nearly started a fire when it went out a few weeks ago.

Thought this was a factory improvement after fuse boxes melted on earlier cars? Did somebody modify mine after production with that external fuse thing?

Editing my post... okay, it didn't "almost start a fire" i suppose, but it seems like a VERY real possibility. I posted pictures of the melted plastic casing from that fuse a week or two ago when it happened, and I can easily imagine that starting a fire if the plastic had been arranged just a tad differently.

Yesterday on my way home I stopped at AutoZone and picked up a 30A fuse kit and installed it. I went under the fuse panel and mounted it to the screws on the fuse in question. My question is: is this the safe way to do it? Should I have placed it in another place? The wire leads on the new fuse were kind of short, so I had to keep it mounted under the fuse panel (where I cannot see if I tripped the fuse). Am I in danger with this setup? Some people have had fires I have learned from gleaning the forum.

Can anyone confirm?

The good new is...it worked! When I got in and started the air came out all the correct places, but no heat. Checked the monovalve, and sure enough, it had a torn diaphragm. Placed an order for another one today. In WI you don't want to wait too long...

The installation that you performed is totally safe. However, it might be inconvenient if the fuse melts due to overcurrent. Since the original fuse melted prior to this event, it's likely that the blower motor is drawing an excessive amount of current and the same issue will arise with the new fuse.

Although the new fuse allows the system to function properly, the original problem still remains.
