Question Strange Starter problem

When I turn the key to "start", there is probably 0.5 second delay...then the starter engages and turns just fine. The engine will fire, but the starter will not disengage. After 2-3 seconds, I turn it off. Happens repeatedly.

So far I have:

Searched
replaced ignition tumbler (it was a little sticky)
replaced ignition switch (didn't have very much spring back from "start". Also contacts very dirty)
Turned key to "run" and jumped started from the black box (same result).

I am thinking that somehow my starter or solenoid is sticking and may need to be replaced, but I don't want to spend that money until I am sure that is the problem.

Comments...suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

Does it not happen when the engine is warm? Probably the starter, the solenoid in the starter has to push the bendix out to engage it and turn on starter power, thick grease has caused this to happen reluctantly.

Generally its best to just replace the starter if that happens. Its a pain to replace, so just do the whole thing and forget about it. So far my dad's 300SD and 300D have both needed starters due to bad solenoids.....my car is still going. However, I think my actual starter motor is getting tired, as it doesn't crank nearly as fast as the other two cars do.... I may just replace it out of paranoia sometime soon....compared to what I've spent on other repairs a starter is nothing. Just another coin tossed in the pit!

Good call! Before it got chronic, it would typically happen on the 1st start of the morning. After that, it would be a little sluggish on disengaging, but reasonable.

The PO supposedly had the starter "rebuilt" about 2 yrs. ago. I'm just wondering if it got a new solenoid and never got relubed.

I read on another thread that you had purchased one at autozoo and were initially happy with it. Is that still working out? They are significantly cheaper than any online vendor...not to mention the return shipping for the core.

So far it has been performing flawlessly. Its probably hit or miss. We had them demonstrate its function to us on their testing machine before we took it home, and it sounded good. Also, upon inspecting it we found the rear motor bearing cover to be new, the solenoid to be new, and it overall was excellent. Reman'd in Malaysia My dad's car has a USA-Industries re-man'd starter (rebuilt in USA!) It is VERY good. Was only $127 at Murray's autoparts. Both are excellent, crank fast and strong, and have been problem free so far. And the 300D gets started at least 4-5 times a day, sometimes more.

Great! No Murray's here...so I guess it will be autozoo. Do you recall what size allen the starter bolts are?

Got the new starter in

I ended up w/ a rebuilt bosch from carquest here in town. Getting that upper bolt out was a big pita. Haven't gotten everything I took out to get to the starter back in yet, but hopefully tomorrow.

BTW....the starter bolts are 12 point allen 10mm.

Finished

Finally got everything put back together! Also replaced orings and the grommet at the bottom of the turbo drain "while I was in there".

Starts like a champ. I read a thread on here where someone said 10-11 hrs. for a starter. That is pretty close to my time in on this job (1st timer). I am hoping this is the last starter this car will need. Thanks for all the great info!

Mark
