glow plug relay buzzes when i turn on key car wont charge

Some one jumped the 300d 1980 and the battery started to smoke. Now it wont take a charge. I changed out the voltage regulator and put a used alternator in.
It still doesn't take a charge and the glow plug relay buzzes when i try to start it . I removed the battery cables last night and charged the battery. this morning still no juice . dimm lights on the dashboard. the glow plug light blinks also. any Ideas out there. I'd hate to start buying alternators and a glow plug relay. 1980 is a different and more expensive relay. $291.00 Ray (can G P relays be fixed)

GP relay might be screwed up causing a constant train?

Disconnect GP relay entirely from battery supply. Try and see what happens jumping/starting the car. Go for a good drive, then let it sit over night.

Draining a battery dead-dead is a good way to kill them though, they're not designed for that. (Deep Cycle batteries, which ours are not, can be drained in that way.)

You sure you didn't reverse voltage when you jumped it? If you battery was smoking, you probably need a new battery now.

That was going to be my question. Reverse voltage can also fry a relay, among other things.

I'll charge an extra battery I keep around and try disconnecting the glow plug battery supply and get back when I can. Thanks jkoebel

Thanks Old300d. I wasn't aware that you could fry a battery that way. I'll check that and get back when I can

I put a new alternator, a good battery and trouble shot the glow plug relay and wiring. All was ok with wires but one of the glow plugs was bad. The plug must have burnt with the jump because I just put all new ones a month ago.
Thanks all for your sugestions. Ray M

Cross-hooking things can sometimes be bad and sometimes you get away with it... temporarily. Risk is making an arc welder.

I went out to the student lot the other day (in the rain) to get the Benz out... ended up helping some geniuses jump start their ricer Civic. They were using one of those little jumper boxes that you can keep in the trunk that has a flashlight built into the front... looked about like lamp cord wire on the leads. (OK, it was a little stronger, but not that much). They couldn't figure out why it wasn't working... he said "I read this little instruction card but it's just not working." Well, they had it cross connected. I pointed that out, explained the difference between red and black, hooked it up, and they tried again. Little low-current device, couldn't even turn the 4 cyl. over immediately. Had them let it soak for five minutes and sure enough it started. "Why'd you let it sit there, man? That's pretty good". I don't remember what explanation I gave.

Are you talking about the relay itself buzzing???

Or just the standard every-mercedes whine that goes for a few seconds when you get in to remind you to buckle up?
