Very wise to check the stretch if your vehicle has done more than 10000klms as, as you can see it can have catastrophic consequences.

Timing Chain Stratch happens but on the 617.952 Engines it is uncommon for them to jump the Gear Teeth.
The non-turbo Engines have more of a problem with that because the Timing Chain Tensioner does not have the Ratchet that holds the Piston from being pushed back. That means any issues with the Oil Pressure have an adverse effect on keeping the Timing Chain Tensioned.
The 6 Cylinder Mercedes Diesel Car Engines seem to have more Timing Chain and Sproket issues.
You can remove the Valve Cover and line up the Timing Marks on the Camshaft and get a rough idea of how much Chain Stretch you have.
