85 300D Front Seat Belt Replacement Warning
My 1985 300D's real production date was: 10/31/1984... A true trick or treat car. It has some weird things on it. But one "improvement" Mercedes made was the Pizo-electric front seat belt which I need some help with.
My 1985 300D front driver's seat belt fabric is somewhat frayed and I want to replace it because the functional strength of the belt might be less than optimum. I know how to do the removal and replacement. I have a complete matching set out of a dead (junk yard) 1985 300D but the unit is one of those Pizo-electric- in a crash we're going to tighten the belt on you. I am assuming this replacement should take place with the battery disconnected. It has a label on the unit which says: "ATTENTION: Do not remove or put into another vehicle! Risk of malfunctioning and bodily injury! OK... Now to the questions... > Has anyone replaced one of these units? > Did anything strange happen? For example did the belt go off (tighten up suddenly or whatever) > Do they have to be replaced in pairs (i.e. both fronts) or can just 1 be replaced? I'd appreciate some discussion on this by our forum members. Thanks, Pete 1985 300D Turbo "Hen's tooth" |

You should really find the factory instructions for replacing the seat belts. I know they contain an explosive charge.
