I need a 79/80 wagon motor in SF

#1 cylinder is dead, massive blow by and 325k on it so I'm looking to sell the car or replace the motor at a reasonable price, I have it at a shop who wants lots of $ to pull the head, he doesn't think the motor is worth putting any $ into. If I could find a good donor motor, I'd have him swap it out. Any one have a good, cheap 617 n/a with SLS motor in Northern CA?

motor options

The other idea is to find a non wagon short block and have my head redone and mated to the "new" bottom end. anyone have any experience with this? i'm curious what time and $ would be involved. I've pulled motors and installed them but I haven't rebuilt one, yet.

Thanks

Cool What about the SFPD weekly abandoned/towed/seized for tickets auctions?

I used to go to them, bids start at just $200

You never know what will show up each week, if you want a W123 Mercedes diesel. I saw a 300TDT wagon from NY, a 240D with flat tires and smashed rear window, and a silver 300D with residential parking permits from Chinatown and a wedding dress in the trunk, so you never know....

The crowds that show up for these auction cares nothing for Mercedes diesels, so you could probably get one for $200-$400 dollars if you don't mind a gamble. If you win, cash only, no returns, and you have to get it out of the yard by the next day. If you are lucky you could get a good runner.

They are down there by Pier 70, off 3rd street. I bought an '86 Chevy Cavalier wagon there once for $325, and fixed it up, and ran it for 6 months of so and gave it away to a friend.
