New Wheel Opinions on My '85 300dt

I'm combing ebay to update the look of my car with some class, kind of like my 107. Each wheel set has a corresponding picture. Please let me know which one you would go with.

Wheel set 1: OEM 16" $500.00 Comes with new Continentals

Wheel Set 2: OEM 16" currently at $300.00 Comes with gently used tires

Wheel Set 3: OEM 16" Could steal for $100.00 one rim has very mild curb rash 2 almost new and 2 tires probably needing replacement

Wheel Set 4: Repica 15" 400.00 brand new no tires

What makes you think that any of those wheels will fit a W123?

Checked the offset on them??

I'll bet you'll find that none of them fit...........

They have the same bolt pattern, and the width seems fine 205-225 max. I thought the same thing with my 85 SL when my dad bought a new clk and offered me his old wheels when he upgraded. My SL had the same wheels.

here are some examples: one has a cls 18" rims. Those probably took some mods to keep it from rubbing.

offset on existing wheels 30

offset on these wheels 36-37

a bit further out but shouldn't be a problem. If a problem arises spacers could solve it.

You had not yet replied on the offset issue Brian was speaking of, only width of the wheel. You addressed it later.

So I suppose I have one vote for keeping it original? Not a bad idea, like how much it costs me. I've tried so many products, though, and I can't get the years of black crud off. Any suggestions?

Ceramic brake pads are virtually dust free.

Keep it stock. Strip and repaint/coat if you want. I personally have no trouble keeping my wheels clean. Simple dish soap worked for years of crud when I bought the car. Maybe I was lucky. Stock wheels that are silver and clean look best on 123's. You can get away with different wheels on SL's, just my opinion.

Incorrect. A higher offset puts the wheel further inboard.

Rethink that statement. If your previous (incorrect) thought that the wheels were further out, how would spacers help? They wouldn't. Spacers put wheels further out, which would exacerbate the issue. That having been said, since wheel with greater offset are actually further inboard, spacers can correct the issue. Note that correspondingly longer lugs will be required.

you've got my car pictured, I didn't keep those CLS wheels on very long for the simple reason is they didn't fit well, the tires rubbed the outer fenders in the front and the inner body in the rear.

I can tell you for certain none of those original 4 wheels will fit a 123 without spacers. the width is not an issue, its where the rim sits in relation to the tie rod end and how deep the opening for the bearing cap is. the first wheel is the only one that uses 12mm lugs, the rest all use 14mm, your hub is 12mm.

Actually, there are only choices, the correct wheels or the incorrect wheels.

What's the width of the new wheels compared to the old (should be 6.5").

The problem becomes the combination of a wider wheel (typically 7 or 7.5") and a higher offset (37). The inside lip of the wheel will be about 5/8" closer to the tie rod (with 7" wheels and 37 offset). It might fit on a W-123........but, you're getting very close............

Spacers are never advised unless you spend the big money for the proper hubcentric spacers with very close tolerances.

It's difficult to give a personal opinion of the look without seeing them on the vehicle. Sometimes they look great.........sometimes it's too much bling.

It's what your personal taste dictates..........do you really care to purchase wheels based upon the taste of others?
