I replaced the rear glass on my 84 SD when I bought it 4 yrs ago. It was milky in the lower corners, and the defrost didn`t work in part of the glass.
The glass shop told me the replacement to OEM would be $3,000.00. WOW!! I didn`t pay that much for the car. the original is laminated glass as said in previous posts. but was told I could get a tempered glass thet had the defrost wires on the glass like the W123 models. price $800.00.

There is a junk yard in Sacramento Silver Star Recycling, their price was $225.00. so went that route, and also new gasket.

There was a grease marking the yard had on the glass, and a couple stickers. Oakland Raders as one. cleaned them off, and to this day when the window gets foggy, I can still see the markings.

Maybe we should stock up on some of these good ones while the supply of good ones are still available.

Iam amazed at how many I see that are milky.

Charlie

the tempered glass will never delaminate and is cheaper because its not OEM. All 126 models have laminated glass front and rear. The advantage of the laminated glass is that the plastic (in the middle) serves 2 functions Insulation(heat/cold) + Isolation(noise). I had the same issue i did replace it with a glass from another car. I can almost guarantee that you'll find rust in that corner. Oh and putting the trim back in the new Gasket OOOOh what a PIA....

Use some glass polish on your entire window and that will eliminate that issue

Thanks for the polish tip, didn`t know there was a glass polish.

The tempered glass will not delaminate, this is true. but the defroster wires will be noticeable like the W123. not a big deal, but if Iam going to take my rust bucket to the concourse, I might not get a blue ribbon.

Most likely all of these old MB running around have rust hidden under the rear glass.

I replaced mine a few years ago with the glass out of a 420SEL. If it starts to get milky again maybe I can get my insurance to cover it. I'll probably just replace it myself.
