Wont turn over when warm...

Hello, I recently acquired a 1981 300TD. I bought it in Portland Oregon and on the way back to San Francisco it decided not to turn over intermittently. When it is cold it will start, warm it will not until it seems to have cooled down a little. Something clicks when the key is turned but nothing else. I have tried starting it in neutral to no avail. I was going to try a few things today but my girlfriend had to drive it. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

Answer:

* Bad ground - body to engine.

* Bad starter.

Check the lead from the battery to the solenoid

Along with Whunters suggestion, you might try making sure the lead from the battery to the soleniod is on tight. I found it to be loose on my car and when I tightened it some of my electrical problems went away.

I would vote for starter. Some of the contacts can be severely worn and once they heat up they tend to lose contact with the rotor in the starter. Lose of contact means no workie. But checking grounds and battery supply is not a bad idea either.
