Any idea what he means?
What engine was mercedes making in 86? I am trying to imagine what this car is like, but the "grammar" of the listing is kind of throwing me off. Of course I could call, but this is more fun, eh?

Sounds like someone has transplanted an OM603 engine from an '86 into an '83. The question is what body is the '83? Would be relatively easy on the 126 car, as it was made with both OM617 and OM603 engines during its production run.

W126 never had diesel manuals. Email and ask the seller and report back.

Can't a 4-sp be swapped in from an earlier Benz, providing the right bellhousing and flywheel can be found?
I own a Chrysler with a 5-sp even though the factory only put slushboxes in that body. All it takes is a bit of wrenching...

From the listing it looks like it would at least turn out to be an interesting story if you do check it out

The 124 300E offered a 5 spd as an option; it would mate to the OM60x engine with no problem (I've done the research and may convert my car someday). Yes, a fair bit of wrenching would be involved but the job is not terribly difficult. I think the only part requiring extensive modification is the driveshaft, which may need to be shortened or lengthened to get the correct length.

190D 5spd or 4spd would work as well. Sounds like a cool car.

Rather than ad to this one, I started a new thread to post my findings.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/203965-83-turbodiesel-stick-shift.html#post1662138 I e-mailed him to ask for pics, if he sends them I will post them.

Spend long enough browsing the myriad parts and pieces as detailed on the Russian IPB site and nothing surprises me anymore about what may have been available. Whether units as described in the images were actually assembled or not is the question. So long as the part number is good in the system for whatever components would be needed to effect a conversion, I suppose anything is doable. Only the car's data card would know the difference in the end as long as an OEM quality job was done.
Have a look at the transmission offerings on the 124.133 - a 4MATIC with a manual 5-speed. Now that would be intriguing - especially coupled with a 603... http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=124133%5F501&M=603%2E960&GA=722%2E317357&CT=F&cat=501&SID=26&SGR=030&SGN=02 |
