Just pulled the trigger on a W116

Been looking for one for a while. Drove it this afternoon. Pictures don't do it justice. It is very clean. Paint is like new. Not a spot of rust underneath and receipts confirm that he's the second owner. Must have been garaged for most of its life. |
Wow...nice find!

very jealous! I'm a softie for the blue interior, since I was raised with my blue leather interior sl. Looks like a very honest seller, detailing the almost invisible rust on the sunroof that could have been easily touched up. Good Luck!

i can't really decide overall but i think the w116 is my favorite body style. sure the w126's have more amenities but that classic look of the 116 is, well, timeless. i just bought one too, but mine has no fuel tank, tons of rust and is being parted out. looks like you found a nice one, there.

You will love it, I know I love mine.

Two things surprised me on the engine. The crankcase breather feeds directly into the U-tube going into the turbo, and not into the air cleaner. The vacuum pump is also oriented differently than either of my other 617's. It's tilted towards the right and the vent line also leads directly into the U-tube before the turbo. The vacuum pump is shaped differently than any of the ones I have seen so far. The servo may have been replaced at some time because the lower portion is metal. |
Very nice! I like the W116 more and more.
Did I see an extra antenna? |
Yes, I asked him about that. It has no cable inside and looks like it has threads for a removeable antenna which is not present. The husband of the original owner had a truck dealership of some kind(or something like that) so the present owner thinks it was for a CB. I couldn't find any evidence of a CB being mounted anywhere.

Nice looking car! If the mechanicals are on a par with the cosmetics, you did well.

Virtually all turbo-diesel 116 ended up in USA, annoying hell outa European customers. Meanwhile practically all Euro auto-makers are now producing diesel cars whereas USA sticks with gasoline pigs encouraged by oil company and Detroit auto-maker conspiracy. Check http://forum.w116.org/ It's Australia forum and apparently 116 diesels never arrived ther on Aussie shores. Basically 116 300SD has spurious reputation as being wasted on USA target market whereas everybody else across the globe was screaming for em. It's easily the most controversial "S" class sedan MB ever produced. Pretty much marks the era when energy conservation began. Y'all remember '73 oil embargos doncha? Caint say enough about historical importance of w116 300SD. Bagged one myself recently that I'm currently restoring to immaculate while driving it daily. LOL, former las vegas showgirl's car that literally fell in my lap. Y'all get a chance to own one, never turn it down. |
I really should get myself a 300SD.

Although not a big fan with the blue interior the car looks in great shape. I my self have a w123 and this looks like it has a longer wheel base can someone please answer that.
