240d won't shut off?

I have noticed a small delay(5 sec) over the past momth now as to when I turn the key to off my 1980 240d. Today for the first time I turned the key to shut my car off and it runs for another minute to two minutes before finally shutting off. Does this mean I have a vacuum leak? Any help appreciated.
Thanks, Dan

Theres a brown vacuum line going into the round, shut off switch on the back of your injection pump (IP). Put vacuum to it (suck on it), If the car DOESN'T shut off, the switch is bad. If it does shut off you have a vacuum leak elsewhere, but try that first and get back.

I pulled the line and put a vacuum on it but it did not shut off. I felt the end of the line and it did have some vacuum on it.

Your fuel shut off valve may need replacing. A friends 240 had the symptoms you described, new valve solved the problem.

Do a search on vacuum shut off switch. You must be careful and get that installed correctly or you could have a 'run away' diesel situation. Its a common repair, read up on it and get back. If you put a vacuum too it and the engine didn't shut down, thats your problem, faulty switch.

I did my search and found that the part was called the "shut off valve". I went ahead and bought this part and the two gaskets. I found a post on this site as to how to stop a run away diesel if it were to happen. I believe one way to stop a run away is to stall it? Do you know if this is an ok way to do it or will I be risking parts of my clutch by doing this? I also found a post of some instuctions on how to replace the shut off valve.
Thanks for your help Stevo,
Dan

Oh Geez, you wouldn't want to let the clutch out :eek:on a run away engine, (even if you had time enough too get into the car and put it into gear) your apt too be the first diesel MB into space.
I have a pair of bolt cutters handy too nip the hard fuel lines or have the top off the air cleaner and have something ready to block the intake.

You just have to make sure the hook on the switch is hooked properly in the IP. The consequences are ugly if you screw up, but its really not that difficult.
