Trans Tunnel Rattle

On my W124 body 300 it has started to get a real nasty rattle at idle coming from the trans tunnel. It seems as if the transmission or the metal part of some mount is actually hitting the body and causing quite a ruckus. To all those who have had a trans out, can you tell me if there is any mount on the top side, or any other part that may be close enough to rattle and be a general annoyance?

Thanks

Kurt Kiefer

There isn't. The shifter bushing has been mentioned as a rattle problem.

Remove the center console, remove the bolts to pull the shifter assembly up, the bushing will lift through the floor on the bottom of the linkage. Try putting light pressure rearward on the shifter when driving to see if it quits.

Simple test is to check for fore-aft play in the shift lever. If there's any play, replace the bushings on the rod that goes from the bottom end of the shift lever to the transmission. No need to remove the shifter for this job, all happens under the car. I don't know if this is one of the bushings babymog described.

Checked the shift lever, no problems there. It seems to do it only when the car is in gear when loaded like at a stop light. When ever the engine is just idling with the torque converter loaded up a little. It almost sounds like the air cleaner now, I checked the grommets and they are a little loose, so I am going to try to replace them first. It does sound like it is a little higher than the trans tunnel though now that I listen carefully. Are there any parts on the back of the engine that could rattle against the fire wall? Oil filter housing??? Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

I can't think of any, there is a heat-shield above the cat (just behind the transmission) on the US cars, ... your air cleaner and intake/exhaust will be unique in the US, the US turbo car has the air filter outboard of the heat shielding behind the right headlamp.
