i dont mess around with ramps- the fact that you have to drive the car onto them is what bugs me- seen too many overshoots.
floorjacks and jackstands for me. if you happen to have a couple of old rims around, they make great insurance when placed flat under your tires. as for gloves, i usually liberate diamond grips from work. they are kinda pricey, but ive had pairs last all day. autozone carries them, i think

I use metal ramps with the cross-bracing. Got 'em at Napa for like $50 or so. They support like 6 or 8 tons or something like that. I got them for my F250, and use them for the Benz as well. Also have 6 ton jack stands if I have to remove the wheels (using jack as backup support of course). Car support is not something to skimp on in my opinion. Too many horror stories out there.

I have a pair of molded plastic ramps, I think they're "Rhinos." I use them under my Chevy K-30 with 454 engine and snowplow frame (not with the plow). The don't bow or make scary noises. If I'm going to crawl under there I also run my 1-ton creeper jack in too, as safety.
I really like ramps, particularly with the Mercedes because it's so low to the ground. I often use the ramps on front and rear on one side, to tip it up for working on something like an exhaust system. In terms of minimum safe stand, I carry a piece of 4X4 wood, as long as the diameter of a tire. With the tire laid flat on the ground, with the 4X4 laid across it, I have a $2 jackstand that is absolutely secure, safe on soft ground, and rolled along with me wherever I went. On the other hand I've always wanted one of those post jack car hoists. Anybody have experience with them? |

SEO - Are you talking about those post lifts that go into the ground?
A friend of ours has one of those from an old gas station that was being demolished. he got if for just taking it home. had to dig the hole, pour the concrete etc... sits along side of his garage out side. has the 4 arms that swing out. draw back the post is in the center of the vehicle and in the way sometimes.
