380 SEL to 300 SDL converion details
Hi guys and gals, this weekend I converted a 1982 380 SEL to a 300 SD (5Cyl). I worked about 24 hours, and the owner of the car about 18 or so. both cars were sitting next to each other. A mechanic might have been able to shave a few hours off, but this was not my first conversion.
The important points to mention are: You should swap the ignition switch from the diesel to the gasser this allows for the diesel vacuum shut off. I trigger the original glowplug circuit with a pushbutton switch, this saves time not messing with the wiring. You swap the tailshaft of the transmissions, so that the diesel works with the original driveshaft to minimize vibrations. with the gasser body unless you want to weld a little bracket you have to live with only 1 engine shock. If anyone has specific questions ill try to answer them. In terms off difficulty if you can pull an engine then you can do the swap, just takes time.

gear ratio?
Are you using the original rear end from the M116? I'm curious how the gearing will turn out. I've heard the M117 W126 cars had an LSD. That would be the ultimate The gearing might be a little high though (2.24)

Good work Icefire/ AKA Dr. DeBakey I salute your transplant!
Now, how do you go about get around the exhaust emissions testing on the 380 SEL's VIN? Or does your Province have those annual inspections? |
