Power Steering pump rebuild?
I have finally pulled the PS pump out of my 1985 300td, now what do I do. I was planning to put new seals into it to stop the leak, but I have been stumped. How does one get the rear open on one of these things? Can i rebuild this or should I just plan on replacement?

That back is a bugger too get off. I dont remember just how I did it but I can tell you when you do get into the pump make sure you put all the little "vains" back in just the way they came out and you should be OK. The shaft seal didn't come with the rebuild kit I got, where is your pump leaking?

Check out the link in this thread. I thought it looked promising but have not had time to check it out:

My pump was leaking around the front seal, behind the pully. Once I got the unit off the motor, I pulled the pully then, carefully, pulled the old seal using some very unorthodox methods..
That took a total of about 30 minutes....try your best not to score the sides. Once the old is out, clean up the area, press the new one in, replace on the motor and fill her up. I haven't had a problem since...and that's been at least 7 months. Total job was just over one hour.

I rebuilt the P/S pump a few weeks back. I didn't find the back cover very hard. I used a screw driver to get the circle clip out that holds the back in. I used an arbor press to pop out the back plate and to get it back in. I think an arbour press really makes it a bunk easier. I think the hard part was getting the front pulley off. I ended up pressing on the shaft. I tried a bearing puller, but it warped the pulley. Keep track of how the parts are assembled. I took out the plates in the middle. Fortunately, there were wear marks to indicated what side went where and how positioned to the two dowel pins. Not really a hard job. I'd say if you know what you were doing, 1/2 hour. I think it took me 2-4 hours. A lot of that time was cleaning the brown/black oil and crud off. Sort of like the rest of my car.

If leak is at pulley, don't take whole pump apart. Take off pulley, remove key, and pry out old seal. Tap in new seal, replace key and pulley.
If you would take inside of pump apart, a big c-clamp is very helpful to remove and install the rod type clamp. You squeeze the back plate with clamp. --------------------- 1984 MB 300 SD Turbo |
