1986 300SDL, that darn Antilock light

What should I look for to get that Antilock light to turn off my dashboard? It doesnt turn on till the car starts moving. Theres a module in the engine compartment...anything to see there? Perhaps warning signs to look for at the sensors? Any help would be grrrrreat!

Thumbs up

Sounds like a dirty wheel sensor to me.

Find the module in the engine compartment and soak it in WD40. I'll take a pic tomorrow where exactly to find it and post it; WD40 took care of my antilock light. And the antilock brakes still work fine.

I heard, however, that the wheel sensors are a common problem...

cables also

On mine it was a bad cable coming from the RF wheel sensor. Trace them back and look for worn areas. If I remember correctly they look like a small coax cable.

On my 86 300sdl it was the right front cable that goes to the sensor on the wheel hub. They take a lot of abuse over the years. The point where it went bad was where the cable sits in the bracket by the brake line. It squeezed it for 21 years and my cable was broken there. My symptoms were ABS light on when car starts and then goes off. As soon as I drove above 10mph the light would go on.
I found two nice cables on E-Bay and replaced both and it is fixed.

Cables are common problems, especially in warmer climates. Also, the sensor will foul with lots of ferrite junk, you can remove it (two allen-head bolts on the front of each caliper) and clean it, that often fixes the problem. If the one in the differential has metal shavings on it enough to cause a warning light, you have bigger problems ('86 is a 3-channel so no rear wheel sensors, just differential).
