What tranny do you have? My '82 is automatic, but my '81 240D, with a manual, gets about 28 on a trips. I'm sure these 240Ds would get better highway mileage if they had an overdrive gear. That 3.69 rear end keeps them revving pretty high.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I'd certainly like the updated performance and economy of a 5-speed 190D, but I'm not sure how durability stacks up against the 'legendary' W123 diesels. (Or is the W123 durability more legend than fact?) A few years ago, a friend bought an immaculate '94 190D, (admittedly, with very high miles) After two months the manual-tranny started making loud noises, and the timing-cover broke.
In my case, my (admittedly rusty) 240D cost $225, plus towing from the sellers driveway. After replacing the rusted-out left rear trailing arm, fixing the floors, and other more minor repairs, the car has lasted over a year without any major engine or tranny problems. Still, I can only dream of averaging 40 mpg. I suppose if I'd been offered a cheap 190D instead, I'd probably have bought it.

Happy Motoring, Mark
Probably 90-95% highway at 60-65 mph. I live on the plains of West Texas and have a hard time finding a city to drive in.

Mileage better by 2 mpg @ a sustained 75 mph, versus 65 mph........don't ask me why. Checked too many times for it to be off.

I recently took a monster road trip in the 300D-from Atlanta down to Miami, back to Atlanta, and then back home to Carson City. I got 25-28 mpg most of the time, with cruising speeds ranging from 70-85. The tank from Ely, NV to Fallon, NV on US 50, I was running up to 110 and slowing down to 80-85 frequently for possible cop sightings. That tank I still got 22 mpg.

The 240D got run hard from Carson City to LA and back and got about 23-24 IIRC. Around town it gets about the same.

I did a test this week on my 2.5 - 400 miles and I used the same fuel station and position. 34.1 mpg. That's 75% cruising at 70, the rest, crawling through traffic or city driving. But diesel was $3.50 a gallon and it cost over $50 to fill!

Not quite. At nearly 11.8 gallons, it would have cost you $41 to top off. Pocket nine bux for a burger and fries .

Have not had our 91 2.5 very long and alot of that time it has sat in the garage for one thing or another so we have only used two tanks of fuel. The first tank was 31.6 mpg and the second 32.7 i would guess about 50/50 city highway miles and not above 70mph with air on at all times.Very pleased with that performance. My $.02 Don

Hypothetically speaking, if I went at 85 mph cruising on my 99 E300, I can get 33 mpg.

If you were keeping the speeds down to 70, you ought to check IP timing. The '85 is geared taller and your economy should be very close to 30.

The SD has the same gearing and it's getting a consistent 30 without a/c..........keeping the speeds 65-67............but with about 10% city mileage added into the mix.

I only get about 20-21 now on winter fuel with the SDL, city driving is tough.
