This last summer I went from Bryan, OH to the Kaufman home in PA. On the way there with the A/C on I got 29.7mpg. On the return trip it was cooler. I ran the A/C less than 100 miles of the trip. This time I got 35.5mpg and this tank included going from the fuel stop in PA to the Kaufman home which was a lot of serious hill climbing. The A/C must take a lot out the the W210 E300 fuel economy.

Well, in the car's defense, it probably needs the valves adjusted and the timing chain is probably stretched out a bit. Not to mention, the injectors probably could use to be cleaned. And it's out of alignment and needs a lot of front-end work.

BUT STILL!

The 300SD recently got 30.5 on one tank and 30.4 on the next tank............so, it's no fluke.

Keep the speed at 63-67 mph and it's doing fantastic.

Freeway trips get me about 32-33 at 70-80mph on this 602. I've seen slightly better if I keep it under 70, but that sometimes isn't possible on the freeways.

Ditto for me. EXCEPT that a trip last weekend to the desert and back under 70 mph -- with long cruises at 50 mph -- scored a record 38.45 mpg, after driving 499.9 miles. Since I'm a fanatic about filling to the brim, and burping the tank in the process by jiggling the car with my hip, I know this was no fluke. I'm truly amazed.

My 98 got me 30.4 overall on a trip (with local city driving) from Norfolk, VA to Gettysburg, PA to Lakehurst NJ and back to Norfolk. Considering the performance with the turbo, I won't complain. BTW most of this was at 70-75MPH

My 91 2.5 turbo does a lot of cruising at 55-60MPH around here - and I typically get 36-38MPG as well. It will still deliver 32-34MPG at 70-75 MPH on interstate trips.

The W124/OM602 combo makes for a great (and very economical) long distance highway cruiser.

I love the fuel mileage of the 603 non-turbo. It still needs to be tuned up, but I am getting about 33 right now. New tires and a good injector cleaning, hope to have it up around 35-37.

I feel better now about my '82 240D's 20 to 25 mpg.
What tranny do you have? My '82 is automatic, but my '81 240D, with a manual, gets about 28 on a trips. I'm sure these 240Ds would get better highway mileage if they had an overdrive gear. That 3.69 rear end keeps them revving pretty high.

Happy Motoring, Mark

40.6 mpg on the last tank which is about typical. 190D 5 speed - King Of Mercedes Fuel Economy!

What % is that 40.6 average city or highway mpg?

I'd certainly like the updated performance and economy of a 5-speed 190D, but I'm not sure how durability stacks up against the 'legendary' W123 diesels. (Or is the W123 durability more legend than fact?) A few years ago, a friend bought an immaculate '94 190D, (admittedly, with very high miles) After two months the manual-tranny started making loud noises, and the timing-cover broke.
In my case, my (admittedly rusty) 240D cost $225, plus towing from the sellers driveway. After replacing the rusted-out left rear trailing arm, fixing the floors, and other more minor repairs, the car has lasted over a year without any major engine or tranny problems. Still, I can only dream of averaging 40 mpg. I suppose if I'd been offered a cheap 190D instead, I'd probably have bought it.

Happy Motoring, Mark
