OK...now what? CC amp question

Today I took the CC amp out of my donor car and installed it. To my surprise and great pleasure...it actually works! WooHoo, I've finally got cruise control!

Well, sort of. It seems to hold within +/- 2 or 3 mph BUT at times it seems to surge and retreat, surge and retreat, surge...you get the pattern I'm sure! It even 'feels' like the motor is cutting out or missing but it's not. Then it will run smooth for a couple miles or so and then it will start again.

Is this something related to the actuator or servo unit? Any help with this will be much-ly appreciated!

You don't have cruise control. It's just a tease to tempt you into thinking you can repair it yourself.

The problem is the amplifier and, after 20 years, none of them are in decent condition anymore.

If you want to make the attempt to solder it, there are quite a few threads regarding this task, but, the results are no better than 50-50. Eventually, all of these units fail..........sooner or later.

I resoldered mine this weekend, and it worked great for about 60 miles, then it started to act like you describe. I kicked it off with the brake pedal to see if it was the engine surging. Tried to set the cruise again, ant it wouldn't work at all.

You're prolly right, Brian, but I HAVE to have cruise in my cars! That's just all there is to it!

I'll end up tearing the thing apart, chasing down some suspect circuitry soldering, then just hope I fixed it! THEN I'll take it out, send it in to GDL, oh wait! They won't take it if it has been pulled apart!

I DON't have cruise control!

Crap!

I had the same problem and resoldered about 1/4 of the board. Honestly, I planned on soldering all of the board but the coating made it a real PITA. I decided to plug it back in and give it a try...and it works now.

I must have bought six different amps from folks claiming that they work. None of them work for more than three months.........if at all.

Should have just bit the bullet up front and get it rebuilt by GDL. Just got it back for the '86 and need to install it.
