2nd Picture. Get (Ha, if it were that easy) 2nd Generation euro bumpers, paint match the cladding and bumpers, well maybe not, but black out the grill, do euros and AMBER corners, and paint the bezels within the headlights for the best look. Also lower about an inch and add some monoblocks, or better yet, aero 1's.

Notice it doesn't have a body kit, and its at the stock ride hieght. Those side blinkers are cool, forgot those, adding those.

I could also just do a 560SEC front bumper, so I can get the lower fog lights, and lower it slightly. Put HID kits in the euro's, and it would look mean at night.
Thats lowered. SirNik84s SD rides right about there. It looks cool with his Euros....

Here are some crappy cell phone pics i just snapped.

I've installed 3 Nub rubbers in the back, a rear sway bar off of a 116. I chopped off 1 coil of my front springs. the front sits nice, but in heavy cornering the tires rub the fenders slightly.

I'll be compressing the front springs once more, and installing some 2 nub rubbers up front replacing the 3 nubs that are in there now and installing some rubber coil shims. its an experiment. but I'm hoping by lowering the front end more, and then raising it back up with the spring shims it should even out and be stiffer....

Its all a big experiment!

attached are some pics of the modified 116 sway bar. and the rubber coil shim i plan on installing in the front as part of my experiment.

as far as a body kit goes... i have the side cladding off of a gen 2 126. that is my idea of a body kit.

well i read somewhere that the 116 sway bar fit in the 126... but I can't remember the forum, and i searched all over the place for verification, but no luck. so i went to the pick and pull and laid under a few cars. and it looked like it fit, except its mounted further back in the 116, thus the bar is about twice the diameter as the bar in the 126, to make up for the extra torque the longer arms would deliver. so i thought SWEET. I'll just lop off the extra 3 inches of arm, and drill some new holes....

I took the bar to school, and removed the 126 bar and tried to install the 116 bar. no luck. the 126 bar has a bend in it that moves it out of the way of the rear dif mount. this bend faces the rear of the car. well the 116 bar has a bend also, but since it is mounted further back in the car, the bend bends toward the front of the car to clear the spare tire sump in the trunk. so the only way to make the 116 bar fit was backward!

so i ran to home depot, and bought some steel bar stock. 1in x 1/4in x 3ft cut it into 2 14in peaces. i then cut the arms of the 116 bar off so that only 6 inches of the arms were left. i them welded the bar stock onto the 116 bar. i used a vice and the leverage of the 116 bar to bend the steel bar stock into the shape of the arms on the 126 bar and.... IT FITS!

it rubs on the spare tire sump. so i took a hammer to the sump... it need a few more wacks. i had to use a razor knife to carve the 116 sway bar bushings to fit into the smaller 126 holders.

I'm currently using the plastic 126 sway bar links. but I'm going to order some metal ones off of a 115/116 to handle the stiffer bar better.

from your cutting of the bar, is it spring steel or just steel?

spring steel. i tried to drill through it. i broke a couple of bits.

i just used regular steel for the arms. as you can see from the pics i only welded on the arms, and i left plenty of room on the arms of the 116 bar so that i don't think it could ever snap.

Hatteras. W126 SD mods being contemplated

If you are going to lower the car, it might not be a bad idea to put on a Mercedes Benz factory skid plate to protect the oil pan. They are NLA so are hard to find now.

As for the euro side fender blinkers, I picked up a set of those at a Mercedes dealer in Finland. they would bolt right up, but you would have to cut a hole in each fender for them, so you would need the placement correct, and the mounting flush to prevent rust.

They are standard equipment in Norway, UK and several other places. I bought the dark euro ambers to match the euro amber corners on the front.

Probably you could order them through the Mercedes Benz Classic center, have your VIN# handy when you do. The W126s now are within the rolling 20 year envelope for consideration by the Classic Center in Irvine, California.

I saw the place a couple of days ago. It is awesome, and the parts guy there told me that they can get euro parts as long as they aren't on the EPA/DPT list - and it is a long one!

I don't think I'm going to lower it. It already rides pretty hard, and I don't want it to ride harder. Right now it rides like a previous generation M3 with 19's. I would imagin if I put some nice stiff H&R's in their it would give a 911 a run for its money in the jarring out my teeth department. I also want the ride hight for when I'm on job sites. Its not a pickup, but pretty damn close.

Yeah I love the W126 but hate the way it rides. Compared to the W140/220/221 its a joke. Way to stiff, to much lean in the corners, ect.

I have driven the same road with a W126 and W140 back to back; with 18in wheels and skinny 35 series tires the W140 can do a much better job of soaking up the bumps.

to bad the 2 nubs i ordered are coming from Germany! otherwise I'd have my suspension mods done tomorrow. and ready to show off at the meet on Saturday. i well.

Jim B. I've got the solution to the skid plat problem also... I'm gonna weld some 1/4 inch armor into the oil pan I'm thinking 1/4 inch peaces inch wide and then every other inch across the bottom of the pan. then some sheet steel on top of that. weld some 1/4 inch steel on the side of the pan so if i really hit hard the sides don't give out. I'll have to use a floor jack to install the damn thing... but what the heck its a W126 not a R107. who's gonna notice another 5Lbs

I think you have to ride in my W124 with the AMG suspension. Makes the W126 feel like an old cadillac!

Speaking of the harsh ride, do you have HD shocks? My 83 SD had bilstein comforts and drove pretty smooth, not as smooth as my S420 was but still smooth. The current 81 SD has GARBAGE monroe shocks that give it a harder ride. But i always thought the W126 was pretty comfortable, but the W140 was 100x better
