$400 about right to replace clutch master/slave cylinder?

My clutch pedal on my 240D went limp, and pressing on it does nothing. The local indie Mercedes shop wants $400 to replace the slave/master cylinder. Is this about right?

I would think about half that would be enough.

Did you check to be sure the resorvour is full? The clutch feeds off the back of the master cylinder and it is easy to be low and not notice it. The clutch would fail first.

Thanks for the input, guys. Brake fluid level looks OK, so I guess it is a trip to the shop.

well they have this thing called wrench. A guy by the name of Ratchet improved it and made it the Ratchet wrench. Then a smarter guy name Jack well he come along and invent --the-- guess what---and brother's name was Stan, and Jack and Stan got together and made these neat things called ------- . Then there are these stores called Auto Parts stores. Yes they really exist. Hairy boring men hang out there and ther is always some chickie thats real sexy working the register. Of coourse they come from a Lower Scial Class and you wouldnt wanna deal with dem low lifes. Then a guy invented this thing called Lava Soap.

So the next time you go to a Nail salon and spend 100 dollars to get your nails cut, think about it. I use wire cutters to trim mine.

Are you (a) Over 60 (b) Opposed to getting yurr hands dirty? (c) just joking. I would rather set my car on fire than let someone charge me 400 to fix it.

I'm over 60 and I'd change clutch slave and master cylinders all day for $400 a pop.
To the OP, you likely need only one cylinder to be changed. And it is most likely the slave cylinder.

Is it a big deal to bleed the clutch line in a 240D? Mine went limp out of the blue when I fired her up the other day. The car has been sitting for a while and I think there is either a slow leak or there may have been an air bubble already in the line as the reservoir was empty (it was full when I parked it).

Thanks;

$400 is about $150 too high. $90 for the MC, $65 for the SC and about $100 for an hour's labor.
