Nice car

We have one just like it except tan interior and 250,000 miles. Very nice, suspension a bit firmer than we would prefer (even with new tires and new Bilsteins all around). The engine needs to rev to get any power; if you hold the tranny in the lower gears it does quite nicely even without a turbo but if you let it shift at 2000 RPM you will never get anywhere. It would be a fun car with a stick shift.

Our car came from Oregon originally, we have all the service records. No rust, I keep an eye on the perches and other weak points. The transmission is essentially the same one that the W124 300DTs have, the 722.4 non-electronic version. We had ours fixed because of leaking seals but the wear parts had another 50,000 miles to go, said the mechanic. Now rebuilt, ours will last the rest of our lives.

Mercedes had some problems with these cars due to the "environmental" wire insulation that they used for a few years. The insulation rots and the wires short-circuit. We had a problem with our back-up lights and turn signals when the tranny was fixed.

That's a good price at that mileage -- we paid more, but that's California, diesels are harder to get out here. Use the service records to help make your decision.

I guess they don't make a chrome cover-up kit for the trunk lid...too bad. Seriously, those wheel well covers are a sign that the car's got rot and they added them as a cheap way to cover it up...look for a rust free one.

You guys are right about the rust, thanks for the replies.

My friend and I drove 2 hours each way to see it. The trunk rust spot is in the center of a dent. There is rust at the bottom of the pass. side door, and all along door trim!!!!!

And rust was around front shock mounts too (up in wheel wells), front spring perches looked fine.

There were little things like no spare tire, only wheel, drivers side mirror was falling off, not sure about A/C, mirror joy sick broken off, paint GONE from pass side door trim (all chipped off and rusty, rest of them looked fine).

For $8K it would prob not be awful if it were not for the rust, which will only get worse and would be a PITA to repair.

If I really want one of these cars I should probably look for a car down South that has much less rust, I would want something around 100K miles tho.

I'd buy one with 200K with service records before I'd buy one with 100K without FWIW.

Sounds like its beat. I wouldn't touch it unless you can get it real cheap, like half that.

The fact that the rust is dripping down the trunk lid tells you something about how the previous owner valued it.

Don't know anything about it though, just posted in case anyone is looking for a project.

For sure. The thing is I have to get a deal on something to feel good about the purchase, from what I have seen any car with around 100K miles is about $12K minimum, add turbo and see $14K.

Agreed. The main reason I bought one with 248,000 miles was the complete set of service records. The first owner kept the car for 200,000 miles and took it to his dealer for everything. The second and third owners used indy mechanics and did oil changes themselves. The older a car is, the more miles it has, the more important that service history becomes.
