They log every vehicle that has ever been insured in the US. Every insurance carrier has access to their data and relies on that data when pulling the records for a new policy. A few years ago, I had to contact Choice Point directly in order to settle a dispute that State Farm had shown on my file though was actually my former wife's responsibility. When I went with USAA, they were able to see the record of that settlement. I am assured by USAA that they are aware that the car is what it is and that I am covered.
Okay, I didn't think about that. Makes sense, though. If they can see that someone else has insured, they will consider it.

Got a bit nervous there for a bit so called USAA to follow-up. This car is okay. But I will be aware of that down the road if another Euro-spec car catches my attention.

Well, I have only been in insurance for a few years, but my dad was in the business for 35, and my granddad was in it for almost 50. I also have an uncle who has sold it for 40. It is something of the "Family Profession" and I've been brought up in insurance, so when I say that you always have to look behind the insurance company to make sure that you ARE covered, you can take that to the bank. That's why I recommend an Independent Insurance agent. If the man is doing his job, he is supposed to be YOUR agent, not the company's. At least, that's the way my family has done for over 60 years.

Dave.

State farm did require that my euro had been previously titled within the state, proving it had passed inspections etc.

I recently switched to 21st century. They were one of a few that would provide full coverage (given the age of our MB's). The rate was less for full coverage than for liability only with our previous insurance (Esurance). For our 83 300SD, 80 300TD, 87 Jeep Wagoneer and 94 BMW 530it. 100k/300k with 100/300 deductibles. Cost $1800 a year - 2 adult drivers no dings - rural area. I spoke with the underwriting department about values and am comfortable with the methods used to determine a fair value for a total loss claim.

Gray Market

I had the same problem, and ended up at 21st Century. Actually, I ended up first at Geico, then when I found 21st Century, my rate was cut in half.

If you like them, use my name & I get a $50 gift card -- and you can then refer others the same way.

Otherwise, I have no connection to the company; just a satisfied customer.

Yeah, I am with Esurance for my three other vehicles right now, and if they won't insure my benz i am going to dump them. It is absolutely asinine to have to pay more than one insurace bill. I am happy with my coverage from them otherwise.

Carrying collision insurance on a 20 year-old vehicle might not be such a brilliant move, either.

You know, last year I would have agreed with you, and then some jackass merged into my 300CD, which I only paid 900 bucks for by the way, and four other cars proceded to pummel the car from every side. My insurance pay out on the car was $6500. So yes, not smart, but it all matters what the car is worth to you and what you are going to be out of if you wreck it. Driving in michigan it is just a matter of time before some hoopdie plows into you. My truck, being the SMALL vehicle it is, is just so hard to see and has been rear ended 3 times now. Bottom line, you need insurance in Michigan.

And therin lies the problem. I am sure that my car is worth more to me than it is to an insurance company. I am afraid that a minor incident will result in the car being declared a total loss, and then I would be offered only a fraction of what it is worth to me. To further complicate matters, my insurance company will not disclose the value that they place on the car, so it is impossible to make an informed decision. So even with insurance, you don't know "what you are going to be out."

Call and talk with an adjuster at the Ins company your thinking about. At 21st, the guide they used had a range of about 5 to 25k on our TD, from the later if fawless.

Its always good to shop.....

.........often for insurance rates. About the only way to communicate to your insurance co that they are not the only game in town. Keeps their pencil sharpened.

I check around once a year.

As to the Euro, the question never comes up. Why does it matter anyway.... especially due to the fact the the car had already been previously titled, registered and insured (ephasize: REGISTERED). Who are they to question the matter if the governing agency registered the vehicle
