Idea!: a 1980 300SD with a 2000+KM driving range!

I have a brand new Fueltank for a 1969 ford midsize...the type that also makes up part of the trunk floor..

The Question: How much more weight would 16 additional gallons put on the SD? would it exceed the weight capacity?

About 120 pounds or so... not too bad. It going to eat up your trunk space. You might want to invest in some HD shocks for the rear.

diesel is approx 7.2 lbs per gallon. Therefore, you would be adding 115 lbs plus the tank.

according to wikipedia, diesel is 850 grams / liter => ~7 pounds per gallon (US) ==> ~112 pounds for 16 gallons.

How much does the tank weight? How much will the mounting weight? Does the tank hold exactly 16 gallons, or slightly more?

100 pounds in the trunk is probably OK, although you woun't have much weight capacity left for luggage or probably even adults in the back seat, and the rear will ride lower than normal.

Of course, if you take out the back seat and replace it with the tank, then you won't loose luggage space or capacity and won't seriously affect ride height

Roughly 116 pounds, plus the weight of the empty tank and associated hardware. Hardly a significant concern.

You probably have to have a really cheap source of fuel to really justify considering it in my mind. If you are travelling long distances now there are twenty four hour fuel places on all major highway arteries or close by. It was not always like this.
My son in law has the opportunity to buy several hundred gallons of legal diesel fuel several times per year for about 1.20 per american gallon. The normal price here is about 4.00 per american gallon.
For him an extra tank might make sense if he were on the road doing longer distance driving quite often. For me it would not be worth the effort at all.

My goal is to have the main tank, and the, we'll call it a slip tank. Run mainly from the main tank and keep the reserve for reserve. My budget is VERY tight here and if I can make a 1 month stretch without having to fuel up that'd save me loads of stress.
I ofen run out of fuel before I get paid...sux the big one.

or I could put Diesel in the main and B100 in the slip and combine the two streams half way so I'm really burning b:50 or so..

I don't lose any trunk space because it's still below the floor, just replaces the tire well...

That second tank would be perfect for a veggie tank. I only have a 6 gallon on mine and I have to fill it up quite often. I use the main tank for veggie and the 6 gallon in the trunk for diesel. I get looks when I fill my tank in the trunk at gas stations.

I find it hard to believe that these cars live within 100-120 lbs of their capacity anyway!

I'd think that would be fine. That's essentially one very light adult sitting in the back seat... or to be fair, in the trunk, which is less balanced. Still... If you went to the grocery store and bought two bags of cat food and two bags of dog food (a common occurrence around us...) and put them in the truck, you're talking about the same thing... and we'd never think twice about that.

It'll be fine.

Here is my veggie tank. Holds 23 gallons. My father in law made it for me. I had them weld in a tube through the bottom so I could run coolant through it. I haven't noticed any problems carrying around the extra weight of the 23 gallons of VO.

That's pretty interesting, Andrew. I was surprised to hear you say you run coolant through the tube in the VO tank. I thought raising the temp was usually the issue with VO.

So, what's the range on your car with both the diesel and the VO?

the "coolant" he is probably talking about, is from the engine, and it Warms the fuel tank. to close to operating temp. around 80C...

The tank has a tube welded in with threaded collars on each end. I put a hose barb on each end and plumbed my coolant to go through the tube inside the tank to heat the VO.

My last full tank of diesel drove me just over 950 miles.
There were a few tanks full of veggie in there of course

Now I know who to call if I need some Aluminum welded. Those are some nice welds!

I had abnormal tire wear when I had an 18gallon axillary tank mounted in my trunk. Combined with the stock 13gallon tank I only got 650-750 miles range.
