back in the 90's I had two Volvos first a 740 turbo... the turbo went out at about 60K. I traded it on a 740 with the 16 valve engine.. as many of you know Volvos (at least then) had timing belts rather than chains which were called to be changed at 50K. I had 51,600 miles on the vehicle,, just hadnt gotten in for my service (hadnt missed a single one) and I pull up to a stop light and the belt breaks.. BENT VALVES ETC ETC~. Volvo N AM wouldnt do a darn thing for me! I vowed right then I would never buy another one and I havent and I won't.
By contrast my 95 e300D has had one major repair over $1000 in 10+ years.. wiring harness and glow plugs ( same time) and it still makes me feel good driving it. Last edited by rahkling7; 11-10-2007 at 07:49 PM. |

My buddy has an '88 240, good ride. Simple to work on, has around 270k on the ticker. Just keeps going.
Plain body, plain styling. I'd certainly drive one if I had been given one.

I had an '83 GL wagon and really really liked it. Silver with black leather interior. Not real fast, but they are solid and safe. Seats hold up a LOT better over time too.
I was actually looking for a Volvo wagon when I happened upon the Silver Flash, aka The Smoker. Funny how things work out. The gasser Volvo 240's have a geat little gas engine that holds up favorably compared to our cars. And you find them far more often with working AC than you do our cars..... With either car you are doing better than a lot other 1980's vintage autos. I see Volvo 240's waaaay more often than W123's and W126's.

Hey now, that can be used to your advantage if you're clever with it.

We had a 1999 S70 T5.
Never again. O2 sensors, ABS/traction module, motor mounts all went out with less than 150 on the ODO. I know they are wear items but the module was 700 doars and it had to be programed for another 200. What kind of BS is that? The dye was wearing off the seat bottom showing black leather beneath the dye. The interior door skins were delaminating from their backing. It did drive well. Great pick up, plush cruiser but too mushy in the corners. We traded it in for a 1995 300D and I have not looked back. I love that car.

The timing belt is definitely a weak link with these vehicles, but it's easy to change, and easy to look at to see the condition of it. I'd say the electronics on the newer Volvo's are much more dependable than the electronics on the MB's of similar age. The thing that does suck about Volvo's is that there seem to be fewer chances to get parts cheap, even though there are a lot of them on the road. And it seems as if you really need to use genuine Volvo parts if you want the part to last and work properly. Also, you almost have to be able to do any maintenance yourself, because mechanics will rip you off big time. After driving my Volvo for a few months, I really don't know which car I will sell when I get my MB on the road again, they are both great cars, and I honestly can't guess which one will last longer. The Volvo is more comfortable to drive, but I like the fact that if the world runs out of oil that I can run the MB on Veggie oil!

Heck, we did the T-belt for $25 in parts... plus extra for a few brews after.

I was looking at a 760 turbo diesel back when I was looking for my first diesel sedan about 5 years ago. It had around 150K on it. It ran soothly but it was a dog. The interior also had lots of rattles and squeaks. It also handled like a whale. The biggest problem was the diff made a horrible groan when driving. The seller would have accepted $1500 for it but I decided to pass on it. It also had a timing belt of some kind on the rear of the engine. It looked like a real PITA to change. The following week I found a nice 85 300D and bought it. It handled like a sports sedan compared to the 760 even though it had 50K more miles on it. It also had much better acceleration and the interior didn't have a single rattle or squeak. Hands down a Mercedes is a far better car.

diesel V diesel, Mercedes all the way.
now gassers...I have 0.3 MBZ gasser experience. I have heard of wiring and relay issues. some volvos are great. The wifes 93 940 wagon handles great, is quite comfortable, fits more tools in the boot-(unless you go by weight- the SLS cant be beat!) has way smaller turning radius than the TD, and I have not spent nearly the time working on it as the Benz. The Volvo with the 4 cyl 8 valve is not an interference engine. broken T belts usually dont damage anything. when we were lookin for a car for the wife, I did some research on Volvo's- she had one earlier, and liked it- and found the B230 engine(8 valve, NA) was prolly one of the most reliable engines put in a volvo. so thats what I looked for. we put 17K on it since then, and all I did was replace the radiator because of the brittle plastic tank issue that they seem to have. In 21K miles on the TD, I have put almost 2x what we paid for it into it in parts. we paid about the same for each car, within a year of each other. one does have 1/2 the miles, though. when my mom was looking for another car, I told her that I would work on it for her if she got a volvo. it is not uncommon for these engines to go over 300k. the mid eighties Volvos' had cheap wiring. gets brittle and fails. fixed in 87/88? also about the time they started galvinizing them. I, too, would love to replace my seats w/ a pair from a volvo. power heated seats... except their leather always cracks. MBtex has that beat hands down. I would not trade the TD for a volvo, but If something happened to the TD, and I couldn't get another, I would go for a 940 0r 740. mabbbeeee even a 240 I have been dreaming about ripping that gasser out of the wifes car and dropping in an OM 617!!!? to each his own. later...

my previous car was an 82 volvo 245 diesel. it was an awesome car, but no match for the 87 300TDT that replaced it. not a fair fight, the new purchase price of the MB was probably more than double the volvo, for one thing. the volvo engine was good, a 6-cylinder version of the VW and audi 4 and 5. they are getting really rare now, few were sold and fewer survived. many were sold with 3-speed automatics and they revved way too high on the highway, which killed them. lots of torque, our volvo would tow anything. the engine is nowhere near as smooth as an MD diesel, especially as the revs got high.
the 240 series volvos are probably the closest thing to a w123 MB there was. built like a tank, simple, long-lasting design that was continuosly improved for over 20 years. volvo lost a great model when the 240 died, nothing they make now comes close imo, and it was RWD.
