Removed the headgasket on my 320i

Bores still show crosshatches. No ridge palpable. Carbon on piston heads very thin...looks almost like someone painted it with black lacquer. 150,000 miles on original motor with no rebuilds.

All valve margins look good. No visual evidence of burning. Carbon deposits on head are symmetrical and sparse. Valve guides look clean and original "brass" color.

K-jet ROCKS!!!

Pulled the instrument cluster on the old car yesterday and swapped the sound encapsulation panels today (what a mess!). Believe it or not, those panels do make a big difference in sound level in the car, they eliminate quite a bit of road noise at highway speeds.

I'm going to try to get the hood open on the old car tomorrow, and have to pull the fuel cutoff on the Volvo TD tonight, I think it failed and that's why it won't start! Get that old beast running and I can pull the smashed Benz into the garage and yank all the goodies I want (engine, tranny, blower motor, wiper motor, seats, half shafts, driveshaft, diff, etc) and then have it hauled off.

Does anyone know what cheap junk wheels will fit, so I can keep the whole set of alloys for snow tires?

Peter

I hit 200+ kM/h on the autobahn today in my 190 just to see what it could do - it took just a few seconds to get to 165, and FOREVER to get up to 200 .... guess I could have gone higher if my exit hadn't come so soon - maybe on a long drive to Frankfurt or something.... anyway it was FUN.

John (did I mention I was in GERMANY with a MERCEDES!!!)

Changed my oil today, used Rotella synthetic 5w40 instead of Rotella dino 15w40, I wonder if it will turn all the seals into dust and make everything leak as switching from dino to synthetic is perceived to do. Well, the car has been running dino for 27 years...

Synthetic oils have smaller molecules and can find the tiniest spaces in between seals and gaskets and such things. They find existing leaks but I don't think that they "make" leaks. I put my 1985 300D (239,000 miles) on Mobil-1 synthetic for the winter. It doesn't leak. The E300D (248,000 miles) just had Mobil-1 synthetic installed for the first time -- it has had Pennzoil 15W-40 since new, compliments of the first three owners. So far, it does not leak either.

But it could.

A Mercedes Mechanic told me that it is not necesarily a good idea to switch over to synthetic oil on higher mileage cars.

Said that the detergents used in Synthetics are VERY aggressive, and tend to loosen up things that normally would have been left alone, and can start leaks, when disturbed.

What I did today

Changed the differential oil in the E300D. It was fairly clean coming out but almost certainly was the original oil from the factory with 248,000 miles on it over the last 11 years. I put in Mobil-1 synthetic.

The E300D's diff drains on the right side, so if you jack up the left side more than the right, the old oil will drain out better, I discovered.

Yesterday I replaced the drag link and idle arm bushing. I also attempted to fix my speedo (it has spun free on the transmission not sure what to do).

In that case, you already had a leak; you just didn't know it because it was full of gunk. The synthetic will do you a favor and help you find it so you can fix it correctly.

Finished the 2 months long weekend warrior fixes on the 82 240D. Here is the tale in a close chronological order.

1. Replace motor mounts
2. Replace clutch - both bearings, disk and pressure plate
3. Replace flex disks
4. Replace the driveshaft support bearing and mounting bracket
5. Replace rear springs and shocks
6. Replace front shocks
7. Replace (actually put in) oil pan gasket
8. Replace rear rotors and pads
9. Replace front rotors and pads
10. Repack front bearings and put new seals

Today I filled her up with oil and coolant and took for a nice long drive. Still need some time to get used to after over 2 month of not driving. I feel like I'm feeling new vibrations and hearing new noises.

I'm just hoping it will last me 2 years without any major repairs. Of course, the next major project is going to be fixing the AC. Mmmm I'm looking forward taking the dash out, NOT! Well at least this is still many months away as winter is up on us.

I drained a 300TD with around 250k miles and the stuff was as black as tar. Something about a sooty diesel with less than optimal aero-dynamics back there caused the breather to ingest soot over the years.

I changed a headlight and fog light today. Same side thankfully. Oh and I managed to overfill the fuel tank. One of the expansion tank hoses is broken and that caused fuel to spill into the spare tire well. I guess I'll add that to my list of to-dos. I have a replacement fuel tank and metal expansion tank to put in at the same time. Neither are damaged.

-Tad
