Injection Pump Question

I am in the process of installing my new injection pump, and the new one had a threaded rod in the front end of it whereas the old one had a bolt. I got this rod out, but it's not what I thought it would be. If you look at the pic, the one end has kind of a bulb area. There are no threads on the inside of the spline which fits into the timer sprocket, but then I looked at the old pump and noticed it also has no threads! But I swear I took a bolt out of there, but now can't find the bolt! How does a bolt go in there without any threads to screw into?

That rod has left hand threads just like the IP main shaft. That's a plus.

Does the timer bolt thread into the shaft into threads you can't see?

You may be right, maybe I just can't see the threads, I wish I could find that bolt so I could try to screw it in. The thing that worries me is the bulbed part of that rod is what was fitted in, almost like it is press fitted in rather than screwed in. This pump was off a 350sdl so apparently there were minor differences from my old pump.

The pump has threads you can't see... the bolt goes through the timer and into the snout of the pump. The threads is left-hand. Make sure you use the basket when removing & installing the pump, and do not leave the basket installed if you use the "dam" type vac pump gasket.

I completely forgot about the basket issue, I don't know if mine has it installed or not.

I cannot find this bolt, can anyone give me the size so that I can go buy a new one? Also, does anyone have any idea why the old pump failed? Apparently the pump lost some small ball bearings which got caught up in the cam and pushed out the casing (see pic). I asked a local guy who has a diesel repair shop, and he said he never heard of a pump dumping it's bearings, so he couldn't tell me what caused the failure. Anybody here have any ideas?

It's an oddball bolt, you will probably NOT find it anywhere, or will spend more time than it's worth searching. Just order the new bolt from the dealer. And also the special washer - you'll need both:

601-990-04-01 - bolt, $4 list
601-075-02-76 - washer, $3 list

Never seen a pump failure like that - very strange!
