W124: Do they get out of timing?

Just wondered on this 5 cylinder engine, do they get out of timing? My car vibrates a bit at idle, which is probably normal for a diesel. After that, the car is very smooth. My dad was in the car recently and remarked that he felt the car missing every 5 seconds or so. I didn't really notice it, but now that he mentioned it, I guess it does seem that way. I know at 200k I'm supposed to have the timing chain checked for stretch, maybe I'll just wait til then?

Thanks,

They do go out over time/miles

If your W124 has a 5 cylinder I'm guessing it's a 602? After you check chain wear and injection timing, check your mounts.

Since we don't have engine mount shocks, check the engine mounts themselves. Since your dad said "every 5 seconds" or so check the bolts (top and bottom) on the mounts. If they work loose, they'll allow odd vibrations. About 10 years or so is coming up on time for new mounts anyway. I replaced mine during the summer - BIG difference. When you get them out you can place them side be side. The right side (under the exhaust) was about 3/8" shorter and the date embossed in the rubber was just over 10 years.
