Weld line on valve cover?

On my 1983 300SD there is a weld line about 4" long along the left side (when facing the car) on the front of the valve cover.

The picture is not of my engine, but just to show where I am talking about.

Any idea why there would be a weld line there?

Chain broke, cracked the cover, cheaper to weld than to get a valve cover at the Pick n Pull?

yup. that is where the valve cover breaks when a timing chain lets go. I have one with JB weld on it in the same place. it's in my parts car that does not run...

Ditto. Thats about the only reason there would be a weld in that area.

Well that's good news then as I probably don't have to worry about my timing chain for a while!

You're assuming a lot

If you have no record of what transpired with the original engine, it could as well be assumed that it wrecked the engine, they bought one from a junkyard that was missing a VC and they repaired the old one and used it.

Well, I could worry about it, or I could just drive it. I know the engine runs great, has good pickup (for a 617), and starts easily in the cold so...

That's right

Those three items add up in my mind also. It makes for a good engine. Hope you get 250,000 out of the current chain.
