Lightbulb 300sd Battery Relocation

I just bought a 1984 300SD, and the battery tray is in pretty bad shape, so to got thinnking (always bad) about moving the battery to the trunk, and simply removing the rusting pan, before the rust spreads. What do you guys think?

Thanks
-Joey

I believe it would cost less ($$ and time) to replace the battery tray with a new one.

you will have to find some SERIOUS heavy duty cable to run 16feet to the starter/engine block. and routing that cable inside the car is gonna be interesting with the fuel tank in the way. running Under the car requires putting two holes into the floor of the trunk, then you have the issue of hydrogen gases venting from the battery into the trunk/passenger compartment of the car. when a race car relocates the battery it has to go in a vented container in the trunk. have fun!@

I was under the impression that I could use a sealed battery, and ground it in the trunk. Then it would only be one hole and cable.

Agreed, it would be cheaper to fix the tray.

What I did with mine was to treat any rust spots, coat the area well with rubberized undercoating, extended the battery's vent tube to below the car, put an acid neutralizing battery mat under the battery and coated the terminals with sealer. Prevention is better than repair.

And whatever you do, resist the temptation to pop off the cell caps and top up the water.

What is the best way to fix the rust? Navy jelly? POR15? Wire brush and primer?

Fix or replace the tray. If yours is to far gone you can probably find a better one at a junk yard, I think new ones run about $50.

Even buying a new one would be cheaper than 16ft of heavy cable!

Upon futher research, it still seems that with a proper box and 4 gauge cables is still under $50. And with an acidproof box, this seems like a forever fix.

I suppose its up to you. Personally I'd just leave it up front where it belongs.

Murphy's Law (in which I believe wholeheartedly) states that once you do the modification, your next jump start will occur at a place where you backed into the parking spot.

I pulled the tray, and it wasn't as bad as a thought, I have access to a gasser w126 parts car. Will that tray fit?
