300SDL W126 Steering Wheels

Is it possible to swap out an 86/87 300SDL steering wheel and replace it with one from a W124 or W140? If so, would there be any airbag issues? And MOMO wheels wouldn't be an option.

I am asking because it would be nice to upgrade from the older looking W126 steering wheel to the newer style wheels of the W124 and W140.

Thanks,
Nick

Thumbs up

Why not a late 126 wheel? Smaller, leather, etc.

The large W126 steering wheels were evidently designed by Mercedes Benz engineers that way for comfort on long trips. With them, you can drive long distances, and the W126 cars were long distance cruisers, by design, and still be able to rest your elbows on the armrests as you go.

Before you change out to a smaller steering wheel (which is easier in quick parking situations in cities) you should be aware of that.

I have an 86 300SDL and already got an answer to this question

I was told that the wheel that would fit well would be a 1993 W124 wheel, as well as a 1993 190E wheel. That is the same wheel as a W140 but uses the contact ring vs. the clock spring of the newer vehicles... 1994+ E and C class. The problem I ran into with W140's is a lot of them had color keyed interiors that included the steering wheel. Hence the reason that the W124/190E wheel made the most sense. From what i was told any of the black airbags that fit the later wheels will work with any year of the later style wheel. Hope this helps as I am needing to replace mine as I hate the size and the airbag cover is starting to crack. Good luck with your hunt, and post any more questions you might have...

I love the big wheel... the old "bus" feel as previously stated.

I can tell you that the wheel out of an EARLY w126 won't fit a 300sdl. Tried it. Bought the car with nonfunctional air bag and decided we didn't want a 1986 air bag exploding in my face anyway... so once the air bag was successfully removed I wanted to get the nice black-and-chrome star in the center... they don't fit. Center hub is just different enough to prevent it.

One point to consider in favor of the large diameter wheel is that if the power steering ever goes out, the larger your wheel is, the easier you'll find it to manhandle the thing where you need it to go without assistance.

Some of you may think I am nuts but I travel for work and am often in rentals of all sizes and shapes. I usually cannot wait till I get back into the old 300sd with the bus wheel and cruise effortlessly and comfortably. I would not want a smaller wheel...but I do mostly open highway driving , upwards of 1,000 per week.

Thanks for all the posts, I just wanted to know if it was possible at all. But I will take all of the views into opinion.

Thanks Again!
Nick
