Whats a good Idle Speed setting for an 85 300D?
 

Got some problems starting in cold weather. Starts really sluggish. I'd like to kick the idel speed up a little, right now I am at 750 rpm...

750 is the speed.

Increasing the speed will not affect the capability of starting in cold weather.

What's the reason to increase the speed for the cold? The engine will idle at 750 in very cold temperatures due to the control by the governor.

Update your CP with your car and location. Your idea of "cold weather" and my idea might be completely different than mine down here in Atlanta.

When was the last time you adjusted your valves? Cleaned your injectors?

Once I had a really worn IP that had absolutely no acceleration that could start my car easily in even 10 degree weather!! When I sent it into a Diesel IP rebuilder (for Cummins, other truck engines) the specialist laughed and said this thing, is nothing but a Tin can with nails in it, its junk.

The IP i have now came off a pretty good engine. I think its good, I just have the settings wrong. Its balky in 30 degree weather. The IP doesnt smoke, gets good acceleration just a the low end when starting I really dont think ist getting much fuel. (Dont worry, got a new Filter)

I do know that the linkage settings are very crucial for good acceleration. You really got to work the slop out of them and get them moving together. I dont know however what's keeping the fuel starved at low temp.

As I said I once had what was the worst fuel pump in the world, it woul literally take 5 miles before it would work well. But even that started easily in 10 degree weather.

You have difficulty starting the engine. This is the only data that we have.

Why do you conclude that the IP is the culprit for this problem? The IP provides fuel to the injectors..........either it does provide it........or it does not..........there is no middle ground with regard to starting the engine.
