fuel regurgitation from filler

According to my girlfriend, who has just taken possession of a 1983 240D, swears that she pumped about 10 gal. of diesel into the car, not enough to fill it, and after driving approx. 2 mins, stopped to check tire pressure only to find the side of the car covered with diesel. There was fuel inside the fuel door level with the lip of the filler tube and slowly dripping down to the ground through the overfill hose.

I can think of no mechanism by which fuel would be pushed out of the filler tube. I could see it possibly leaking out in the case of a full tank and the car parked on a side slope, but she says that didn't happen. Nor did the pump spill on the car or around the filler. It sounds like the overfill drain tube is partially blocked, but I can't see that causing overflow either. Help me set my mind at ease, she's freaking cuz she thinks she may be losing dinero at $3.50/gal. It took me about 6 months of heavy lobbying to convince her to let me find her this car and now she thinks its possessed.

I lost fuel down the side of the car one time when I did not get the filler cap properly replaced after filling. I only had one of the two "ears" engaged inside the filler tube. As a result, the cap did not seal, and when I went around turns and generally sloshed fuel around - it came out the filler.

Very easy to do, and it made such a mess that I've never repeated the mistake again. I check the filler cap each time now by pulling back on it to make sure it is held down properly.

I've heard of the filler tubes rusting out, so that's a possibility too. But not getting the cap on perfectly tightly is a more likely cause. I had this problem once, but I didn't miss any ears. I just didn't screw the cap on all the way down until it hit the stop.. drove around for near a week probably dribbling biodiesel at every corner in town until I figured out what was going on. It never went down the outside of the car, just down the overfill tube. Boy did I get stinky milage that fillup

There's also a replaceable gasket in the cap. If it's missing, you'll never get it on tight enough to prevent a leak.
